Cougars pick up first win of season

GREENFIELD — After trailing 4-0, Greenfield-Central’s softball team combined to score 11 runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to earn the first win of the season, 11-7, over visiting Triton Central Monday.

The Cougars scored two in the third, took the lead with a four-run fourth and added some insurance with five in the fifth.

The Cougars were able to win despite committing six errors and having just three hits.

Triton Central (0-1) had four hits and committed four errors.

Greenfield-Central’s Kristen Wineinger had a triple, stole three bases, drove in four runs and scored twice.

Josie White and Leilani Forshey scored three runs each. Forshey and Charlotte Riehle had the other Cougar hits.

Freshman Ailea Dowdy was the winning pitcher. In six innings, she gave up just one earned run and three hits. She walked seven and struck out three.

Greenfield-Central (1-3) is scheduled to travel to Scecina (0-2) Tuesday.
