Adams awarded with first-generation scholarship

GREENFIELD – Greenfield resident Garrett Adams was one of 29 first-generation Indiana college students to receive a scholarship called Realizing the Dream by Independent Colleges of Indiana.

Adams is a Trine University sophomore majoring in mechanical and electrical engineering.

The scholarship recipients, one from each of Indiana’s private, non-profit colleges and universities, were celebrated at a banquet on Feb. 24 at the Eiteljorg Museum.

Made possible by a grant from Lilly Endowment Inc., the scholarship program annually recognizes first-generation college students from ICI colleges and universities. Students are selected for the $4,000 award for outstanding achievement as they successfully advance toward completing their bachelor’s degrees.

Adams was part of the university’s Basic Utility Vehicle (BUV) team, usually made up of only seniors, during his freshman year. He completed a co-op related to his BUV experience last spring.

To honor recipients, ICI created individual videos of each student describing what it means to them to be a first-generation college student and thanking the influential educator they have chosen to honor. Videos can be found at icindiana.org/rtd.

In addition, the influential educators receive $1,000 in professional development grants.

Adams honored Andrew Shores, who was his math teacher at Morristown Jr./Sr. High School.

MV enrollment applications opening

FORTVILLE – Mt. Vernon schools have announced windows of time in which families that are out of district but would like to transfer to the corporation may apply.

The first window is April 12-22, while the second window is May 3-13. Parents and guardians will need to complete a separate application for each student who currently lives outside of the school district, or who anticipates moving out of the district before the 2024-25 school year begins. By completing an application, students are entered into a pool and requesting to attend the schools. It does not guarantee enrollment, but priority will be given to current out-of-district and transfer students, their siblings and employees’ children. All applicants will receive notice by May 31.

Visit mvcsc.k12.in.us for details, or visit the website during the windows to apply.
