CUMBERLAND — A $10 donation could generate $30 of good on Saturday, thanks to a store campaign to aid community food pantries.

Community Outreach Ministry Eastside (COME) hopes grocery shoppers will donate at the Cumberland Meijer to help the food pantry the ministry operates. A group of member churches in Hancock and Marion counties form COME and also support the pantry, housed at Cumberland First Baptist Church.

Through Meijer’s Simply Give campaign, shoppers can pick up a gift card near the checkout, give it to the cashier, and indicate how much they wish to donate. Donations made Saturday will go even farther, as that’s a designated double-match day.

Donations at the Cumberland Meijer — 11315 E. Washington St., Indianapolis — will support the COME pantry. (Donations at the McCordsville Meijer will go to the Come to Me Food Pantry at Fishers United Methodist Church.)

Pantry leaders point out the Simply Give program has generated more than $86 million in food donations for more than 230 food pantries in the Midwest since 2008.

The COME pantry is open from 1-3 p.m. Wednesdays at Cumberland First Baptist Church, 116 S. Muessing. The pantry serves residents of Buck Creek and Sugar Creek townships in Hancock County, as well as residents of Warren Township in Marion County.

COME member churches are Amity United Methodist Church in Greenfield, Cumberland Christian Church, Cumberland First Baptist Church, Cumberland United Methodist Church, Eastgate Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Indianapolis, Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Indianapolils, Mt. Comfort Church, St. John United Church of Christ in Cumberland and St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Indianapolis.

COME is looking for more volunteers for various positions. Contact Stephen Denney at (317) 891-5179 or email [email protected].

Also, COME is raising funds for a tablet. Checks may be made out to COME and mailed in care of Cumberland First Baptist Church, 116 S. Muessing St., Indianapolis, IN 46229.
