FCCLA members earn awards

GREENFIELD – Students from Greenfield-Central High School earned several awards at a state conference earlier this month in Muncie.

The G-CHS Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) earned three gold medals, seven silver and three bronze. Izzy Monsma became a national qualifier in the professional presentation event, and will continue to compete to represent G-CHS in Seattle this summer.

Scholarship deadlines approaching

HANCOCK COUNTY – Several scholarship opportunities are available to local students heading to college or trade school, and application deadlines are coming.

The Greenfield Central School Foundation announced several opportunities for Greenfield-Central seniors, with $71,000 in scholarships to be awarded this year.

Included are: the Jane Marilyn Haines Foster Scholarship at $8,000 a year; the Patricia Sue Pope Scholarship, two at $2,000 a year; the Shirley Gibbs Just Imagine Scholarship, two at $2,000 a year; the Kathleen Dowling Legacy Scholarship, one at $1,000 a year; the Jeff Harris Barber and Beauty School Scholarship, one at $1,000 a year; and the Lovell Family Scholarship, one at $2,500 a year. The McCordsville Police Department is offering three scholarships this year to students interested in criminal justice. The scholarships are available from a donation; one $1,000 scholarship and two $500 scholarships will go to high school seniors or college students that major in criminal justice or a related field. Applicants must live in Vernon Township. Deadline to apply is March 15; email [email protected] for information.

Tri Kappa, a local service sorority, is seeking Hancock County applicants for local scholarships to be awarded for the 2024-25 academic year. Scholarships include: high school scholarship for seniors Hancock County high schools (a total of $5,000 will be awarded); Mary Ann Strawmyer Pickett Continuing Studies Scholarship for women at least 25 years old (a total of $500 will be awarded); Helen Roath Memorial Continuing Education Scholarship for people who have had their normal course of education interrupted for any reason (a total of $800 will be awarded). EH schools to host open house tours

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Eastern Hancock schools will host an open house event for new/prospective students and families from 6-7:30 p.m. March 19.

People interested in learning more about EH schools can tour the campus, ask questions of the principals and more. About 35% of EH students live outside of the district; the transfer process opens April 1 and space is limited.

The schools are located at 10450 E. 250N., Charlottesville. Tours begin at 6 p.m. with the elementary school (enter door 4); 6:30 p.m. at the middle school (enter door 10) and 7 p.m. high school (enter door 10). Local students named to Manchester honor list

HANCOCK COUNTY – Several students with Hancock County roots were named to the dean’s list for academic achievements at Manchester University in the fall 2023 semester.

The list included Ethan Hollis of Greenfield, studying biology and chemistry; Garrett Hollis, Greenfield, biology and chemistry; Sean Julian, Greenfield, athletic training; Gary Rincones, Greenfield, sport management; and Madison Stamm, Fortville, early childhood and elementary education.

The students achieved a grade point average of 3.5 or higher while completing at least 12 semester hours. Manchester University is located in North Manchester and Fort Wayne.

Kindergarten enrollment open at EHES

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Kindergarten enrollment is open at Eastern Hancock Elementary School, with registration events scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday this week.
