GREENFIELD — Greenfield-Central High School’s principal, Jason Cary, will soon become the school system’s new assistant superintendent, leaving a vacancy at the helm of the high school for next school year.

Carey steps into his new role as soon as the last tassel is turned at the high school’s graduation ceremony June 1.

Meanwhile, the school board has started searching for a new principal to take his place.

“To fill a high school principalship and to do it right, we want to advertise it for a while and bring a lot of people in (to interview). We’ll have parents, teachers, administrators and a couple students to orchestrate that,” said Supt. Harold Olin, who planned to post the job March 12 and keep the search open for about a month.

The goal is to have someone approved to take Cary’s place during the May 13 board meeting, he said.

Meanwhile, Cary is looking forward to taking the latest step in his career while savoring his final weeks at the high school.

“I am very excited for this opportunity. Greenfield is my home, and I am so happy I get to stay here in the community and continue working in the district.” said Carey, whose wife, Lindsey, teaches English at the junior high school. Their two sons also attend Greenfield-Central schools.

The family moved to Greenfield in 2017 when Cary was hired to lead the high school, where he has guided more than 1,400 students and 100 staff members each year.

Olin said Cary’s personability and skill set made him the perfect candidate to become second in command at the school system, where he will oversee secondary curriculum, school safety, community connections and marketing.

He’ll also oversee due process for students, including suspensions and expulsions.

Olin said the school system hasn’t had an assistant superintendent since 2019, when it restructured to an administrative team of directors overseeing various facets of the corporation.

“We’re restructuring again a little bit as we prepare for next year. There will be a slight bit of shifting around as we start the 2024-25 school year,” said the superintendent, who said Cary’s new position will be broader in scope than a director’s role.

Cary’s recent promotion aligns perfect with his goal to one day become a superintendent.

He has received his superintendent’s license from Indiana State University, where he also earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees and is working towards a doctorate in education.

Cary said he’ll be wearing many hats in his new position.

“The biggest part of my job will be to work with the high school and junior high when it comes to curriculum, instruction and assessments, ” said Cary, who added that he was “very relieved” to know he would still be working with students and staff at his beloved Greenfield-Central High School.

“I have so many fond memories of my time at G-CHS, but I think the relationships with the staff and the students are the things I appreciate the most. It is such an amazing building, and the adults there are the best I have ever worked with. The new principal will inherit an incredible building,” he said.
