Parker to informally connect with community

FORTVILLE – Superintendent Dr. Jack Parker of Mt. Vernon schools will be hosting “traveling talks” events this spring.

The events are an opportunity for members of the community to informally meet with the superintendent and share their thoughts, questions and concerns about the schools.

No reservation is necessary. Talks are scheduled for 7 a.m. at Tim’s Bakery, 6087 W. Broadway St., McCordsville; noon March 28 at Sero’s Family Restaurant, 11720 E. Washington St., Indianapolis; and 7 p.m. April 18 at Libby’s Ice Cream & Gifts, 11 S. Main St., Fortville. Participants can enjoy a free donut at the Tim’s Bakery event, or a free cookie or $1 of ice cream at the Libby’s event.

Preschool open houses coming up

HANCOCK COUNTY – Several local preschools will host open houses or events in the coming weeks so families can connect with early learning programs prior to signing up for the 2024-2025 school year.

Faith Lutheran Preschool, 200 W. McKenzie Road, Greenfield, will host an open house from 5-7 p.m. Feb. 29. Call 317-468-0610. Bradley Preschool, 210 W. Main St., Greenfield, will have an open house from 6-7 p.m. Feb. 27; call 317-462-2662.

Financial aid meeting coming up

GREENFIELD – Support for graduating high school students and adult learners will be available in an upcoming workshop about financial aid for higher education.

Learn about FAFSA, financial aid applications, at the Hancock County Public Library from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 2. The library is located at 900 W. McKenzie Road, Greenfield.

Band program to benefit from mattress sale

NEW PALESTINE – A local high school is hosting a company selling mattresses March 10, with a portion of sales to benefit its music program.

Custom Fundraising Solutions will be at New Palestine High School from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 10 at 4485 S. Victory Drive, New Palestine

Name-brand mattresses will be available with prices up to 50% below retail, according to the company. The New Palestine Marching Dragons benefit from the sale in the seventh annual event in the main gymnasium. For more, visit cfsbeds.com.

Scholarship applications open now

HANCOCK COUNTY – Several scholarship opportunities are available to local students heading to college or trade school, and applications are available now.

The Greenfield Central School Foundation announced several opportunities for Greenfield-Central seniors, with $71,000 in scholarships to be awarded this year.

Included are: the Jane Marilyn Haines Foster Scholarship at $8,000 a year; the Patricia Sue Pope Scholarship, two at $2,000 a year; the Shirley Gibbs Just Imagine Scholarship, two at $2,000 a year; the Kathleen Dowling Legacy Scholarship, one at $1,000 a year; the Jeff Harris Barber and Beauty School Scholarship, one at $1,000 a year; and the Lovell Family Scholarship, one at $2,500 a year. Co-Alliance is offering $30,000 in scholarships to high school seniors going on to study agriculture in college. The agency will supply 30 $1,000 scholarships, and applicants must be the child or grandchild of a member of Co-Alliance Cooperative. Visit co-alliance.com/scholarship; deadline to apply is March 1.

The McCordsville Police Department is offering three scholarships this year to students interested in criminal justice. The scholarships are available from a donation; one $1,000 scholarship and two $500 scholarships will go to high school seniors or college students that major in criminal justice or a related field.
