MVEF announces gala plans

FORTVILLE – The Mt. Vernon Education Foundation has announced plans for its 2024 Black and Gold Gala.

“Together We Are Illuminating Futures” is the theme of the event set for 5:30-11:30 p.m. April 6 at the Indiana Roof Ballroom. Event highlights include a VIP reception, cocktail reception and silent auction, dinner and program and dancing. The event is an opportunity to celebrate contributions from staff and teacher of the year award winners, distinguished alumni, business partners and more. Emcee will be Rafael Sanchez.

Children’s theater applications available

GREENFIELD – Applications are available now for this summer’s Hancock County Children’s Theater.

Children currently in grades 4-8 interested in acting, singing, dancing, art or theater tech are encouraged to apply. The summer program runs June 3-29 at Greenfield-Central High School; this year’s production is “Wagon Wheels West.”

Adult programs coming to local libraries

HANCOCK COUNTY – Local libraries have announced several programs for adults coming up in March.

Vinyasa Yoga is every Saturday morning at the Sugar Creek branch of the Hancock County Public Library, 5731 W. U.S. 52, New Palestine.

Retirement Basics will be at 6:30 p.m. March 4 at the main branch of the HCPL, 900 W. McKenzie Road, Greenfield. The Greenfield site will also host an Emergency Pack Workshop March 14, featuring tips from Hancock County Emergency Management.

The HCPL also offers adult book clubs, a crafting club, a writing group, tech help drop-in and genealogy research. For dates, times and registration, visit hcplibrary.org.

In Fortville, Tuesday Morning Club for seniors continues through March, as well as adult English classes at the Vernon Township Public Library, 625 E. Broadway St., Fortville. Purse fundraiser to benefit Meals on Wheels

GREENFIELD – Meals on Wheels of Hancock County will host a Spring Designer Purse Bingo fundraiser in March.

The event is 5:30-9:30 p.m. March 21 at St. Michael Catholic Church, 515 Jefferson Blvd., Greenfield. Tickets are $50 and include 15 games, dinner and dessert. In addition to a chance to win purses, the event will include raffles, door prizes and more. Participants must be 21 to play.

Friends of the Library to host book sale

GREENFIELD – Friends of the Library will host a book sale in March, raising money for concerts, children’s performers and special projects at the Hancock County Public Library.

A Friends members-only sale is March 7. The sale is open to the public March 8-11 at the central branch, 900 W. McKenzie Road, Greenfield.

Most hardbacks are $1, paperbacks are 50 cents. Children’s books are 50 cents and 25 cents. DVDs, CDs, and audiobooks are $1.

Friends of the Library is also seeking new members and volunteers that would like to assist with supporting the HCPL. Membership forms are available at the Friends Book Store in Greenfield and New Palestine. It is also available to download from the library’s website https://hcplibrary.org/about/friends.htm.

Blood drive in memory of Brynnley

GREENFIELD – The LiveLikeB Foundation will host a blood drive March 9 in memory of Brynnley Niederhaus.

Brynnley, age 6, died in 2021 having had a rare, inoperable cancerous brain tumor. The LiveLikeB Foundation was established in January 2022 by her parents Scott and Kristyn Niederhaus in honor of Brynnley to spread awareness for Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma and childhood cancer. Cancer and cancer treatments can put patients at risk for low blood cell and platelet counts; blood and platelet transfusions can enable patients to receive critical treatments needed to fight and survive cancer.

The event will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 9 at Brandywine Community Church, 1551 E. New Road, Greenfield.
