INDIANAPOLIS — In a tightly-contested game for 36 minutes, Mt. Vernon’s boys basketball team picked up its third straight win with a 70-66 overtime decision against Pike Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore guard Julien Smith had a game-high 25 points, including four in overtime. Smith had all 11 of the Marauders’ second-quarter points. He had three of the team’s six 3-point field goals.

Mt. Vernon led 17-15 after one and 28-27 at halftime. The Marauders’ lead grew to 44-40 heading into the fourth quarter before the Red Devils rallied to force the overtime.

Along with Smith’s big scoring game, 6-foot, 5-inch junior Tyler Davis had a career-best 17 points. Sophomore Luke Ertel added 14 points, including 3 of 4 at the free-throw line in overtime.

Tanner Teschendorf had five of his seven points in the fourth quarter.

R’mani Wells and Brady Fitzgerald had three points each. Aden Daugherty scored one point.

Originally scheduled to be played Saturday evening, the game was moved to a noon junior-varsity tip-off due to both schools having girls basketball teams competing in regional tournament games later in the day and evening.

Mt. Vernon (13-8, 4-1) returns to action Friday with a Hoosier Heritage Conference home game, and Senior Night, against No. 16 New Palestine (17-4, 5-1).

Pike (6-13) travels to No. 4 Lawrence North (19-2) Friday.
