Animal programs coming to local libraries

HANCOCK COUNTY – Several animal events are coming up for children and teens at local libraries.

Children can “Read to Cleo” Jan. 14. The “ambassador opossum” from Hancock Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation will be in the children’s room of the Hancock County Public Library, 900 W. McKenzie Road, Greenfield. Learn more or register at hcplibrary.org.

“Meet the Bunnies” in an event for tweens, teens and their families Jan. 18. The Indiana House Rabbit Society, a rabbit rescue organization, will be at the New Palestine branch with animals to pet, and participants can make rabbit toys for the organization and earn service hours. The Sugar Creek branch library is at 5731 W. U.S. 52, New Palestine. Register at hcplibrary.org.

Bentley’s Buddies & Friends reading dogs will also be at local libraries in January. Therapy dogs are available to help reluctant or struggling readers; no need to sign up in advance. The dogs will be at the Vernon Township Public Library Jan. 20 at 625 E. Broadway St., Fortville. Dogs will be in both Greenfield and New Palestine libraries Jan. 21. The central library is located at 900 W. McKenzie Road, Greenfield; the Sugar Creek library is at 5731 W. U.S. 52, New Palestine.

Preschool open houses coming up

GREENFIELD – Local preschools are hosting open houses soon.

Cougar Cubs Preschool will host two open houses Cougar Cubs East will be 5-6 p.m. Jan. 22 at 1331 N. Blue Road, Greenfield. Cougar Cubs West will be 5-6 p.m. Jan. 24 at 700 N. Broadway St., Greenfield. The Greenfield-Central preschool offers developmentally-appropriate curriculum focused on early learning standards in a play-based, inclusive environment. Greenfield Parks and Recreation Preschool has also announced plans for an open house for the 2024-25 preschool year. The event will be from 6-8 p.m. Feb. 21 at the lower level of the Patricia Elmore Center, 280 Apple St., Greenfield. Enrollment opens Feb. 22 at parks.greenfieldin.org.

JAG hosts Pacers fundraiser

GREENFIELD – An Indiana Pacers game coming up in February could bring in money for a local organization.

Greenfield-Central’s Jobs for America’s Graduates is selling tickets for the Feb. 28 Pacers game against the New Orleans Pelicans. The game is Feb. 28; the JAG program gets a designated dollar amount from each ticket sold. Tickets are $12 for upper balcony, $20 for lower balcony, $40 for corner and $60 for center. MVEF announces gala plans

FORTVILLE – The Mt. Vernon Education Foundation has announced plans for its 2024 Black and Gold Gala.

“Together We Are Illuminating Futures” is the theme of the event set for 5:30-11:30 p.m. April 6 at the Indiana Roof Ballroom.

EH hall of fame nominations open

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Nominations are open for the Eastern Hancock High School Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame.

The award was founded to recognize and celebrate the positive accomplishments and contributions of Eastern Hancock High School alumni. Graduates of Eastern Hancock as well as Charlottesville, Westland, and Wilkinson High Schools are all eligible for consideration.

It is the purpose of the hall of fame to recognize such individuals who have through their performance, conduct, and achievement, brought credit and honor to themselves and Eastern Hancock High School. Their public example will hopefully serve to inspire future graduates to perform and serve in the same spirit.

Honorees will be recognized for outstanding achievement in their chosen field, leadership, the arts, and volunteer/community service. Nominees with outstanding records of achievement deserving of special recognition are eligible.
