The community gardens in Vernon Township recently received a grant for improvements.

HANCOCK COUNTY – The Vernon Township Community Garden and Hancock County Historical Society recently received mini grants for community improvement projects.
The grants, from the Community Foundation of Hancock County, came from the Hancock County Enrichment Fund. The fund helps support long-term solutions, respond quickly to emergencies, and meet changing social, cultural, educational, and environmental needs in the community, according to a press release from the CFHC.
The Vernon Township Trustee received $1,420 for the Vernon Township Community Garden.
The funds will be used for more than 60 native drought-resistant plants in the first planting phase of the Gardens of Vernon. Purdue Extension, Hancock County Master Gardeners and Hancock County Soil and Water District were utilized to identify the appropriate plants and ensure that no invasives are in the mix. This grant was made from the Agricultural Heritage Fund. A member of the Community Foundation’s Spirit of Community fund grants that sustain the spirit and rich history of our agricultural heritage by supporting activities associated with agriculture education, youth organizations, and other related agriculture programs in Hancock County.
The Hancock Co. Historical Society received $1,000 for electrical upgrades. The funds will be used for upgrading electrical and lighting at the Chapel in the Park and the Old Log Jail, located in Riley Park.
These grants were issued from a pool of funds that is set aside each year to meet nonprofit organizations’ needs that arise outside of other grant cycles.
