HANCOCK COUNTY — A McCordsville man who was charged with breaking into a county home last December had his case settled in Hancock County Superior Court 1 earlier this month via a plea agreement.

Michael William Warren, 50, 7500 block of N. Hannah Street is headed to the Indiana Department of Corrections (IDOC) to serve a six-year term, court records state. Warren had been charged with a Level 4 felony count of burglary of a dwelling, a Level 6 felony count of residential entry as well as a Class B misdemeanor count of criminal mischief from an incident Dec. 12, 2022.

After admitting guilt to the Level 4 felony, Warren was officially sentenced by Judge D.J. Davis to the six-year term at IDOC with all of the term to be executed. Warren has been encouraged to take advantage of programs such as Recovery While Incarcerated while in prison and he can petition the court after completion of such programs for a possible modification. The other lesser charges in the case were dismissed as part of the plea deal. He will receive jail credit for 475 days already served.

According to a probable cause affidavit, officials from the Fortville Police Department were called to East Mill Street in reference to a security check at a residence there December, 2022.

The man living there told officials the suspect who broke into the home was described as a male wearing a grey hoodie who took off running north. An officer eventually found the male near Mill Street and Ash Street, the affidavit said.

Officers detained and spoke with Warren who told officials he was invited to the residence and when no one answered the front door he went to the back of the house and went inside, the affidavit said.

The homeowner, however, told officials a different story.

The people who live in the residence told officials they returned from a funeral and noticed all the lights were on and things were amiss inside the home as they noticed things had been rummaged through. The male resident told officials after searching the residence he found Warren lying between a wall and the side of the bed, but that Warren took off when the home owner retrieved a handgun.
