Local chapter honors Boston Tea Party

GREENFIELD – Local members of the Daughters of the American Revolution are preparing for the 250th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party.

Greenfield’s Brandywine Creek chapter of the DAR met Sept. 16 and pictures were taken with feathered headbands made by Linda Laursen to represent the colonists who tried to disguise themselves while dumping tea. There were 254 barrels of tea dumped into the harbor, and local members sent 254 tea bags to the upcoming 250th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party. A re-enactment will take place this December in Boston. Cherie Burrow provided an antique wooden barrel for staging the dumping of the tea.

Also at the meeting, Lisa Benson provided information on a petition to have a U.S. stamp created for the American Indian Code Talkers who used their language as a secret communication for the U.S. military.

Elizabeth Keller provided a history of Constitution Week, which was Sept. 17-23.

Guest speaker at the event was Jason Riddle, a suicide prevention coordinator for the VA Hospital.
