NEW CASTLE — A big opening quarter helped fuel Mt. Vernon to a bounce-back Hoosier Heritage Conference win over New Castle.

The Marauders (3-4, 2-3) defeated the Trojans (1-6, 0-5) 51-21 on the road at New Castle Friday night.

A 23-0 first quarter gave Mt. Vernon a comfortable early lead, and a 14-0 fourth quarter sealed the win after the Trojans outscored the Marauders in the second and third quarters.

A Mt. Vernon touchdown pass midway through the second quarter pushed the lead to 30-0, but the Trojans answered in the closing minutes.

New Castle’s Tylin Thrine broke off a 95-yard touchdown run early in the third to cut the lead to 30-14 before the two teams traded scores.

Joliba Brogan pushed the Marauders lead back to 23 with a 9-yard run, but Tyson Lewis answered with a 16-yard rushing score for the Trojans.

Brogan added two fourth-quarter touchdowns, and the Mt. Vernon defense intercepted a New Castle pass to cap off the win.

The Marauders are on the road next Friday at 7 p.m. at Shelbyville (3-4, 1-4).
