Gibson is Baltimore’s Clemente Award nominee

His uniform has changed, but Greenfield’s Kyle Gibson’s give-back to his communities has not.

The 11-year major league veteran, in his first season with the Baltimore Orioles, is the Orioles nominee for Major League Baseball’s 2023 Roberto Clemente Award.

The Clemente Award is bestowed annually to the player who best represents the game of baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field.

Every year, each MLB club nominates a player to be considered for the Award in tribute to Clemente’s achievements and character.

Gibson was signed by the Orioles in December. During his career, he has played for the Minnesota Twins, Texas Rangers, and Philadelphia Phillies. He was the Phillies’ Clemente nominee last year and has also been a nominee for the Twins, the organization he was drafted by and played for from 2013-2019.

He has raised nearly $500,000 for the communities where he has played.

All 32 clubs have nominees for the award. Fans can vote for the award at https://www.mlb.com/community/roberto-clemente-award#vote.

Voting started on Sept. 8 and will go until Oct. 1.

Gibson’s bio shares that when he became an Oriole at the end of last year he contacted the front office about his charitable passions.

The bio highlights the numerous charitable organizations Gibson has been a part of and helped establish in each of the cities he has played.

Along with his great work off the field, Gibson is having one of his best year’s on the field.

The 35-year old right-handed pitcher is 14-9 this season, the most wins he’s had in any one season. He ranks tied for sixth for most victories in the majors and is second in the American League trailing only Zach Eflin of Tampa Bay.

He has gone over the 100-win mark for his career and has helped lead the O’s, who just recently clinched a postseason spot, to their first playoff berth since 2016, when they lost the American League Wild Card game.

The Orioles. going into Tuesday night’s games, have a 2.5 game lead over Tampa Bay in the American League East Division. Their 94-56 record is the best in the American League and second best in the majors behind the National League’s Atlanta Braves (96-54).

Gibson was scheduled to pitch Tuesday night in Houston.
