Sen. Mike Crider, R-Greenfield, was one of two state legislators honored by the Indiana State Medical Association Sept. 10 for an outstanding effort on behalf of Hoosiers’ health. The ISMA recognized Crider for his work to expand access to mental healthcare. He authored Senate Enrolled Act 1, which will increase capacity by creating a network of community behavioral health clinics. SEA also continues the implementation of 9-8-8 suicide prevention call centers, while ordering the addition of a toll-free helpline to direct people to other mental health sources. It also re-establishes the Indiana Behavioral Health Commission to ensure the state remains focused on such initiatives. As a member of the Senate’s appropriations committee, Crider helped advocate for a $100 million first step toward accomplishing these goals, according to a press release from ISMA. Crider is pictured with ISMA President Dr. David R. Diaz. The other legislator honored was Rep. Brad Barrett, R-Richmond.
