Greenfield-Central high jumper Elliot Ryba and two Cougar relays broke school records at Friday’s Cougar Clash track and field meet at Greenfield-Central High School.

The Cougars won the eight-team event with 157 points. Greenwood was second with 118.

Ryba, who cleared 6-feet, 9-inches to set a new school record earlier in the season, broke his mark by clearing 6-feet, 10-inches to win the high jump competition.

In the meet’s initial event, the 4×200-meter relay, Aaron Lee, Ian Jack, Michael Runions and Kirk Knecht broke the record they had set the year before, finishing in 1:31.64.

The Cougars 4×400 relay team wrapped up the night by breaking a 12-year old mark. Lee, Jack, Runions and Griffen Wheeler clocked in at 3:26.25 beating the record, by one second, set in 2011 by Cody Bates, Jacob Culver, Jayke Thompson and Matt Dickerson.

Jack (400, 51.25 seconds), Ryba (high jump, 6-10), Knecht (long jump, 21 1/2), Reese Hill (discus, 151-1) and the 1600 relay team all won blue ribbons.

The team will compete Thursday at Mt. Vernon in the Hoosier Heritage Conference Championships.

Boys Golf

Mt. Vernon wins Batesville Invite

With a season-low score of 320, the Mt. Vernon boys golf team won Saturday’s Batesville Invitational, at Hillcrest Country Club.

Aaron Arkenau and Nils Erkmanis led Mt. Vernon, each carded 78s. They finished one stroke behind tournament medalist Colten Schroeder, of Greensburg, who finished with a 77.

For Mt. Vernon, Asher Cotton finished with an 80. Brady Pearson shot 84 and Jace Lugar had an 89.

New Palestine (362) finished ninth in the 12-team event. The Dragons were led by Luke Cofer with an 88. Nick Barada followed with an 89. Alex Cofer carded a 92, followed by Landon Beaty (93) and Josiah Kissel (94).

Mt. Vernon beat Madison (324) by four strokes.

Other team scores included, Greensburg 336, Shelbyville 351, North Decatur 354, Batesville 357, Jennings County 357, East Central 357, Franklin County 378, Milan 391 and Oldenburg Academy 455.

New Palestine was scheduled to host Warren Central at Hawk’s Tail on Monday. Mt. Vernon was slated to go to Rushville Monday to take on the home team and New Castle.

Cougars compete at Delta

Greenfield-Central’s boys golf team shot a 330 at Saturday’s Delta Invitational at Albany Golf Club.

Tyler Young had the low round for the Cougars with a 76. Josh Alley followed with an 81. Avery Young carded an 83 and Bryce Hasty finished with a 90.

Greenfield-Central was scheduled scheduled to host Lawrence Central at Hawk’s Tail Monday and travel to New Castle to take on the Trojans and Shelbyville Tuesday.

Baseball

Royals drop two to HC

Eastern Hancock (6-12) was swept in a doubleheader at Heritage Christian Saturday.

The Royals lost 14-0 and 14-1.

In the opener, Carson Borden’s double was the lone Eastern Hancock hit.

In the second game, Colton Dishman had a single and scored a run. Chase Stewart hit a double. CJ Titara and Luke Fletcher also had hits.

Heritage Christian improved to 9-10.

Eastern Hancock was scheduled to host Seton Catholic Monday and Morristown Tuesday.

Softball

New Palestine gets DH sweep

Winning by scores of 5-1 and 13-1, in six innings, New Palestine’s softball team earned a doubleheader sweep at Jennings County Saturday.

Courtney Study fanned five and allowed just five hits and a first-inning run to earn a complete game victory in the opener.

The Dragons lashed out 10 hits, including three from senior catcher Aglaia Rudd, including an RBI-triple.

Alyssa Mumaw had a home run and Maddie Engle had an RBI-double.

In game 2, the Dragons blew it open with a seven-run sixth inning.

New Palestine had 18 hits in the win.

Rudd had three more hits, including a double and three RBIs. Allie Blum went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Ella Holman had a three-hit game and also drove in a run. Mumaw, Sydney Oliver and Katie Hirschy each had two hits and an RBI.

Frosh pitcher Sadey Hughbanks threw five innings to pick up the win. She allowed just one earned run, while striking out one. Jennings County had seven hits off the first-year pitcher.

The 14-4 Dragons are at Fishers Wednesday.

Royals lose in extras

In eight innings, Eastern Hancock’s softball team lost 7-6 at Frankton Saturday.

Eastern Hancock dropped to 13-4. Frankton improved to 11-3.

For the Royals, Kaylee Kline had a home run and two RBIs. Lilli Ringer went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Addisyn Trackwell had two hits and knocked in a run.

Eastern Hancock traveled to North Decatur Monday.

G-C goes 1-1 at Elwood

The Greenfield-Central softball team went 1-1 at the Elwood Invitational Saturday.

The Cougars defeated Jay County 16-8 and lost to Fishers 15-5.

In the opener against Jay County, Madysen Herbert struck out 14 in six innings. Faith Butler and Makenna Rankin each went 4-for-5. Camille Burelison, Josie White, Katie Muegge and Leilani Forshey each hit home runs.

Against Fishers, Savanna Riall and Kristen Wineinger hit home runs.

The Cougars battled back from a 7-0 deficit to cut it to 7-5, but weren’t able to keep up with the Tigers.

The Cougars are scheduled to play a Hoosier Heritage Conference game today, at home, against Pendleton Heights. They were scheduled to play at Cardinal Ritter on Monday.

Mt. Vernon defeats Westfield

On Friday at Westfield, Mt. Vernon picked up a 7-6 victory to improved to 9-9 on the season.

Lexi Beeler went 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs. Easton Wampler had a double and an RBI. Ainsley Baer had three hits. Shelby Rakosky went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs.

Graci Hines went all seven innings in the circle. She struck out six, gave up six hits, three earned runs and four walks.

Girls tennis

New Pal team wins one at Franklin

At Saturday’s Franklin Invitational, the New Palestine girls tennis team won one of three matches.

New Palestine beat Batesville 3-2, lost to host Franklin 5-0 and dropped a 4-1 decision to Roncalli.

Against Batesville, Mia Knoop won her match at No. 2 singles, 6-1 ,6-0. Bethany Blachly, at No. 3 singles, won 6-3, 6-4.

Amelia Schneider and Kenzie Kleiman, playing at No. 2 doubles, won 4-6, 6-2 and 10-4, in a super-tiebreaker.

Against Roncalli, Courtney Johnson won her match at No. 3 singles 6-2, 6-4.

On Friday against Shelbyville, New Palestine won 5-0. Olivia Hasenkamp won at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5. At No. 2, Kaitlyn Mitchell won 6-3, 6-3. Knoop won 6-2, 6-3.

In doubles play, Blachly and Jo Harvey won 6-3, 6-4. Alyssa Kauchak and Maddy Potter won 6-4, 6-4.

New Palestine (12-6) travel to Greensburg today.

Girls track and field

Greenfield-Central 5th at Clash

Greenfield-Central finished fifth out of seven teams at Friday’s Cougar Clash at Greenfield-Central High School.

Franklin won with 186.5 points.

For the Cougars, Savannah Lake placed second in the 100-meter dash (12.22 seconds). Tessa Joyner was runner-up in the long jump with a personal best distance of 16-feet 3 1/4 inches. The 4×100 relay team of Juliann Jones, Rachel Baker, Lauren Pechin and Lake finished second in 51.05 seconds.

Greenfield-Central will compete in today’s Hoosier Heritage Conference Meet at Mt. Vernon.

Boys volleyball

Dragons go 1-3

The New Palestine boys volleyball team went 1-3 at Saturday’s New Palestine Invitational.

After winning its opener, 2-0, over Lawrence Central, New Palestine lost a pair of three-setters to Martinsville and Whiteland. It wrapped up the day with a 2-0 loss to Monrovia.

Against the Bears, New Palestine won by set scores of 25-19, 25-14. In the 2-1 loss to the Artesians, set scores were 17-25, 25-16, 15-9. Against Whiteland, set scores were 25-13, 23-25, 15-13. In the match with the Bulldogs, scores were 25-17, 25-22.

New Palestine is 10-15 and is scheduled to host Warren Central today in the final regular-season match of the season.
