Cougars finish second, Marauders place fifth at Kokomo Relays

Greenfield-Central placed second and Mt. Vernon finished fifth at Saturday’s 99th Annual Kokomo Relays.

For the Cougars, Kirk Knecht (200-meters), Aaron Lee (400), Carter Crouch (800) and Griffen Wheeler (1600), by just .13 seconds, won the 3000-meter distance medley relay in a meet record time of 7:34.34. They beat the old meet record, set in 1989 by Anderson High School, by four seconds.

G-C’s group of Michael Runions (low), Payton Foley (high), Jake Hinton (low) and Cash Looper (high) won the shuttle hurdle relay, where two runners compete on low hurdles and two on high hurdles. They won with a time of 1:07.66.

The Cougars had two more champions in field events. Elliot Ryba won the high jump at 6-feet, 4-inches. Knecht won the long jump with a distance of 22-feet, 3-inches.

Ian Jack (400), Liam Brinkruff (800), John Stuckey (400) and David Wasson (800) were runners-up in the 2400 mid-distance relay with a time of 6:01.58.

In the 3200, Chris Ross was second in 9:51.

DJ Marble had Mt. Vernon’s top finish with a third in the 100-meter dash.

Greenfield-Central had a third-place finish from the 4×100 relay team of Jack, Lee, Runions and Knecht, clocking in at 44.01 seconds. Looper was third in the 110 hurdles (16.34 seconds). Reese Hill placed third in the discus with a throw of 141-feet, 3-inches.

Center Grove won the meet with 145 points. G-C scored 97. Mt. Vernon had 42.

Greenfield-Central and Mt. Vernon return to action at Mt. Vernon Wednesday to compete in the Hancock County Championships.

Royals second in invitational

Eastern Hancock was edged by Hagerstown in the Eastern Hancock Boys Track and Field Invitational last Thursday.

The Royals had wins from Jayden Stine (400-meter dash, 54.32 seconds), Preston Markley (1600, 4:48.89; 3200, 10:43.76) and Logan Hoskins (discus, 123-feet, 2-inches).

Hagerstown won the seven-team event with 142 points. Eastern Hancock had 134. Other teams competing included Horizon Christian, Herron, Blue River Valley, Southwestern (Shelbyville) and Edinburgh.

Last Tuesday, Eastern Hancock lost a dual at Richmond.

The Royals will compete Wednesday at Mt. Vernon at the Hancock County Championships.

Girls track and field

G-C 3rd, MV 7th at relays

Greenfield-Central finished third and Mt. Vernon placed seventh at the 99th annual Kokomo Relays Saturday.

G-C scored 51 points. Mt. Vernon had 30. Center Grove won with 138.5 points.

Greenfield-Central’s Savannah Lake won her heat of the 100-meter dash and finished second overall with a time of 12.64 seconds.

Reagan Crouch was second in the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.30 seconds.

Mt. Vernon’s Ayana Moore was runner-up in the shot put with a distance of 31-feet, 9-inches.

Greenfield-Central’s team of Crouch, Megan Scott, Addison Buckley and Lilly Ndoye were third in the shuttle relay with a time of 1:11.42.

Both teams will compete at Mt. Vernon Wednesday in the Hancock County Championships.

Eastern Hancock finishes 2nd

Eastern Hancock’s girls track and field team finished second in the Eastern Hancock Girls Track and Field Invitational Thursday.

Herron won with 127.5 points. Eastern Hancock finished second with 88, three more than third-place Hagerstown. Other teams in the eight-team event included, Blue River Valley, Horizon Christian, Wisdom Builders, Southwestern (Shelbyville) and Edinburgh.

Eastern Hancock got first place finishes from Ellie Meyer (high jump, 5-feet, 2-inches) and Sydney Hayes (discus, 99-feet, 1-inch).

Last Tuesday, Eastern Hancock won a dual meet at Richmond.

The Royals will compete Wednesday at Mt. Vernon in the Hancock County Championships.

Girls tennis

Doubles teams lead way for Dragons

New Palestine’s girls tennis team went 2-1 at the Plainfield Invitational Saturday.

The Dragons opened with a 3-2 loss to Pike. They bounced back with a 3-2 win over Oldenburg Academy and a 4-1 victory over Plainfield.

New Palestine’s doubles teams went 5-1 on the day.

At No. 1 doubles, Bethany Blachly and Jo Harvey went 2-1. At No. 2, Maddy Potter and Alyssa Kauchak went 2-0, while Emily Appleby and Amelia Rojowski went 1-0.

In singles play, No. 1 Olivia Hasenkamp went 2-1. Both Kaitlyn Mitchell and Courtney Johnson went 1-1. Playing at both No. 2 and No. 3 singles, Mia Knoop went 0-2.

New Palestine is 8-3 on the season and play today at Southwestern.

Eastern beats Northeastern

With a 3-2 win at Northeastern Friday, the Eastern Hancock Royals girls tennis team improved to 5-3 on the season.

The Royals are back in action today at Morristown.
