Sertoma Club contributes to local groups

GREENFIELD – The Greenfield Sertoma Club recently donated $12,250 to local organizations.

The Salvation Army of Hancock County received a $10,000 contribution. Contributions were also made to the Hancock County Children’s Theater, $1,000; Love INC, $1,000; and Zoey’s Place, $250.

Sertoma has been offering“SERvice TO MAnkind” since 1965 and welcomes new members. For more information, call David Berard at 317-462-9681.

Federal employees group to meet in May

RUSHVILLE – The next meeting of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association Chapter 0813 will be at 11 a.m. May 3. The group, called NARFE, will meet at the Elks Lodge in Rushville. For more information, email [email protected].

DAR members create baskets for librarians

KNIGHTSTOWN – Members of the Major Hugh Dinwiddie chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution created treat baskets for five local libraries.

The group, appreciative of local communities’ dedicated librarians, created baskets with snacks, pens, notes and books in honor of National Librarians Day April 16.

Also at their recent meeting, members reviewed applications for scholarships, which will be announced next month for Knightstown, Eastern Hancock and Tri high schools. Rose Marie Smith shared historical information about John Harwood; Sherry Rigney reported on the National Defender Moment; and Smith presented a program on Emilie Todd Helm, half-sister of Mary Todd Lincoln. The group’s next meeting is at 1 p.m. May 6 at Spiceland Friends Church.

Brandywine Creek DAR awards good citizen

GREENFIELD – The Brandywine Creek Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution presented Ella Hubbel with the DAR Good Citizen award.

Hubbell, a Mt. Vernon High School student who plans to attend Purdue University to study aeronautical/astronautical engineering, is the daughter of Jon and Lori Hubbell. She wrote a winning essay answering the question of all Hancock County high school participants: “How will the essential actions of a good citizen – dependability, service, leadership and patriotism – meet the challenges that America faces in this decade?” Hubbell was presented with a certificate and monetary award at the April 15 meeting of the DAR at NineStar Connect.
