Mt. Vernon baseball wins in extra innings

Mt. Vernon scored a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat Hamilton Southeastern 5-4 in a non-conference baseball game at Mt. Vernon High School Thursday.

The Marauders had scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game, 4-4, to help force extra innings.

Joseph Wilson threw four innings of one-hit ball in relief to earn the win. He had six strikeouts and walked two. Starter Nick Heitman fanned seven and gave up four hits in five innings.

Wilson also had a two-hit game at the plate, including a double and RBI. Gavin Johnston drove in two runs. Konnor Scheidt had a double and RBI. Nathan Criss added a double.

HSE led 3-2 after the first inning. Neither team scored again until the Royals upped their lead to 4-2 in the sixth.

Mt. Vernon (10-2) is scheduled to play at Anderson Monday at 6 p.m.

Dragons soar above .500

New Palestine’s baseball team scored in five of six innings played and defeated Southport 12-2 at New Palestine High School Thursday.

New Palestine jumped out to a big lead early, scoring three runs each in the first, second and fourth innings to take a 9-1 lead.

Ben Morwick had two hits and three RBIs. Wes Stiller had two hits, a double, and two RBIs.

Adam Rickey, Jacob Morris and Ben Hirschy each drove in two runs. Hirschy, Morris and Rickey each had a double. Blaine Nunnally and Morwick scored three runs apiece.

Brayden Marrow went four innings, giving up five hits, one earned run. He had four strikeouts.

The Dragons are 6-5 overall and are scheduled to play at Franklin Central today.

Eastern loses to Wapahani

Eastern Hancock’s baseball team dropped a 15-2 Mid-Eastern Conference decision at Wapahani Thursday.

Chase Stewart had a double and run scored. Caleb Johnson had a hit and an RBI. CJ Titara had an RBI. Jalen Helderbrand scored a run.

The Royals are 3-8 overall and 1-4 in the MEC.

Wapahani broke the game open with an 11-run third inning.

Boys golf

Mt. Vernon defeated at PH

The Mt. Vernon boys golf team lost 160-166 to Pendleton Heights at Fall Creek Golf Course in Pendleton Thursday.

Asher Cotton, who tied for medalist honors with a 36, led the Marauders.

Nils Erkmanis and Jace Lugar both shot 42, and Parker White finished with a 46.

Mt. Vernon is scheduled to host Greenfield-Central at Ironwood Golf Course in Fishers on Monday.

Eastern falls to Wes-Del

Eastern Hancock’s boys golf team dropped to 1-5 on the season with a 195-207 loss to Wes-Del at Muncie Elks Golf Course Thursday.

The next scheduled match is Monday against Tri at Royal Hylands.

Girls tennis

Dragons win all five vs. Yorktown

New Palestine’s girls tennis team won all matches in straight sets in a 5-0 victory over host Yorktown Thursday.

At No. 1 singles, Olivia Hasenkamp won 6-4, 6-0. At No. 2, Kaitlyn Mitchell won 6-2, 7-6 (6). At No. 3, Courtney Johnson was victorious 6-1, 6-0.

In doubles action, Bethany Blachly and Jo Harvey won 6-1, 6-0. Alyssa Kauchak and Maddy Potter also won 6-1, 6-0.

The Dragons are 4-1 in dual matches and 2-0 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference.

After playing in Friday’s Hancock County Tournament, the Dragons are slated to play Tuesday at Greenfield-Central.

Boys volleyball

New Pal beats Lutheran 3-0

The New Palestine boys volleyball team defeated visiting Lutheran 3-0 Thursday.

The Dragons won by set scores of 25-23, 25-23, 25-20 to improve to 7-9 on the season.

New Palestine plays a varsity only match Monday, 6 p.m. at NPHS, against Shelbyville.
