Career ready: Mt. Vernon students earn awards at state conference

FORTVILLE – Mt. Vernon High School students recently showcased their career preparation skills and earned awards at a conference.

The Indiana Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) and Indiana ProStart hosted a conference in Muncie March 5-7.

Alexis Beeler, Abby Flick, Hannah Matthews, Leaf Sexton and My Thoan Tran received the gold award for Career Exploration. Ariel Bennett, Ysbabelle Ferreyra and Zoey Gaw received a gold award for FCCLA in Action. Cameron Demirciouglu, Reagan Kannain and Keyona Shearer received a gold award for FCCLA Focus on the Basics. Abby Flick, Hannah Matthews, Leaf Sexton and My Thoan Tran received a gold award for Lesson Planning, while Alexis Beeler received a silver award for Lesson Planning.

Mt. Vernon also received the Indiana Game On Award at the conference. FCCLA at MVHS is led by Tammy Bauchert, the school’s family and consumer sciences department chair.

More than 800 students from over 60 schools participated in competitive events, which focus on employability skills in human services, hospitality and tourism, education and training, and visual arts and design.

Indiana FCCLA is a career and technical student organization that provides personal growth, leadership development and career preparation for students in family and consumer sciences education, according to a press release. ProStart is a nationwide program that unites the classroom and industry to develop talent for tomorrow’s restaurant and food service leaders.
