Bee nature event set for April 22

GREENFIELD – Learn about bees, hives, pollinators and more in a family event at 10 a.m. April 22.

Greenfield Parks Department is hosting a program on bees at Thornwood Nature Preserve, 1597 S. Morristown Pike, Greenfield. The educational event is in conjunction with Community Beekeepers of Hancock County. The event is free but signup is available at parks.greenfieldin.org.

EH Bands to have Culvers fundraiser

GREENFIELD – Eastern Hancock Bands will benefit from a Dine to Donate event coming up.

Culvers in Greenfield will donate a portion of proceeds to the band program. The event is 5-8 p.m. April 25 at the restaurant, 1846 N. State St., Greenfield. No flier is needed to support the event.

Nationwide student art competition announced

COLUMBUS – U.S.Congressman Greg Pence shared details recently of a nationwide high school arts competition, sponsored by members of the U.S. House of Representatives.

The Artistic Discovery Contest is open to all high school students in Indiana’s sixth congressional district, which includes Hancock County. The winning work of the district’s competition will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capital., alongside winning artwork from districts across the country. The winner will also receive two round-trip tickets to Washington D.C. to attend a reception and meet Pence.

The deadline to submit artwork is May 5. Artwork may be up to 26 by 26 inches, and may be up to 4 inches in depth, but must not weigh more than 15 pounds. Art must be original in concept, design and execution and can be paintings, drawings, collages, prints, mixed media, photography or computer-generated art. Local student selected for Greece trip

GREENFIELD – Luke Muckerheide of Greenfield was recently selected for a study abroad program to Greece through the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity.

The Tragos Quest to Greece program is a 10-day journey with fellow undergraduate members of Sigma Phi Epsilon from across the country, accompanied by alumni mentors and university faculty. The experience focuses on changing the way brothers view the world, their fraternity, and themselves through the study of how Greek philosophy, governance, and the arts influences everyday life.

Muckerheide was selected as one of 18 undergraduate members of the fraternity from a pool of over 13,000. A sophomore in Purdue’s Honors College, Muckerheide is majoring in mechanical engineering with planned minors in psychology and mathematics. He maintains a 3.89 grade point average and is active on campus, serving as vice president of member development for his fraternity and vice president of operations for Purdue’s Habitat for Humanity club.

Local administrator earns award

FORTVILLE – Lisa Heitman was named District Treasurer of the Year for Region 8 by the Indiana Association of School Business Officials.

Heitman is the corporation treasurer at the Mt. Vernon Administrative Service Center. She has worked at Mt. Vernon worked for 11 years in several departments and has a strong focus on furthering the district’s financial goals by proactively seeking efficient and innovative methods, according to a press release from the school corporation, which went on to describe her as trustworthy, diligent and a joy to be around.

Heitman’s educational background is with Purdue University and Indiana Vocational Technical College. She was also named Staff of the Year for the administrative building in 2023 and 2021.

Scholarship applications due soon

GREENFIELD – Scholarship opportunities are still open for those hoping to go into education or trades.

The Hancock County Retired Teachers Association is offering a $1,000 scholarship to a local resident wanting to become an educator. Applications are due April 14; contact a school counselor or Susan Geesa at 317-332-2744 for more information.

Trade and technology scholarships through the Hancock County Community Foundation are available, with a deadline to apply April 14. Email [email protected] for details. The Hancock Health Foundation is also offering scholarships for those seeking radiologic and technology fields; the Mt. Vernon application is due May 12.
