Mt. Vernon’s baseball team improved to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference with a 14-2 win at Shelbyville Wednesday.

The win completed a two-game series sweep of the Golden Bears.

The defending HHC champs are tied for the top spot with Greenfield-Central. Both teams are 4-0 in the 14-game conference season.

On Wednesday, the Marauders had eight hits and took advantage of seven Shelbyville errors.

The Marauders are slated to host Harrison in a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Dragons’ rally falls short

For the second straight night, New Palestine rallied in the late innings, but, also for the second straight night, came up short in a Hoosier Heritage Conference game against Yorktown.

On Wednesday, at Yorktown, the Dragons’ baseball team trailed 9-0. They scored six in the sixth inning and one in the seventh in a 9-7 loss.

New Palestine is 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the HHC.

On Tuesday, at NP, the Dragons lost 9-6.

They were down 9-0 before scoring three runs each in the sixth and seventh innings.

New Palestine plays in the Lebanon Invitational Saturday.

Softball

Eastern Hancock pounds Warren Central

Eastern Hancock improved to 5-2 on the season with a 17-1 victory, at home, over Warren Central Wednesday.

Brooklyn Willis and Emma Bolding each had home runs for the Royals. Bolding also had two doubles and four RBIs. Willis went 3-for-3, adding a double and triple. She also drove in four.

Kaylee Kline had two hits and three RBIs. Sammie Bolding and Willis each scored three runs.

Pitcher Tatem Adams had 10 strikeouts and threw a two-hitter.

Eastern Hancock travels to Cowan today.

Dragons suffer first loss

New Palestine’s softball team lost for the first time this season, 7-6 at Franklin Central Wednesday.

Allie Blum and Katie Hirschy had late-inning homers to tie the game 6-6, but the Flashes plated the game-winner in their final at-bat.

New Palestine (4-1) travels to Hamilton Southeastern Thursday.

Greenfield-Central wins slugfest at Westfield

Greenfield-Central outscored Westfield 19-12 to win a non-conference offensive battle at Westfield Wednesday.

The Cougars improved to 5-2 with the win.

Camille Burelison and Olivia Roberts each had two hits and a home run. Kristen Wineinger, Makenna Rankin and Savvanna Riall had three RBIs each. Josie White had four hits.

Greenfield-Central plays host to Franklin Friday.

Boys Track and Field

Cougars win four-team event

Greenfield-Central hosted and won a four-team boys track and field meet Tuesday.

The Cougars scored 119 points. Eastern Hancock was second with 57. New Castle scored 41.5 and Scecina totaled 22.5 points.

The Hancock County schools claimed all the first place ribbons.

The Cougars won all but two events. Eastern Hancock won a pair of distance races.

In the 3200-meter run, Eastern Hancock’s Preston Markley won in 10:26.66. The Royals 3200 relay team of Markley, Andrew Metz, Brandon Metz and Noah Wheeler won in 9:11.08.

For G-C, Ian Jack swept the short sprints, winning the 100 (11.55 seconds) and 200 (23.08 seconds).

Aaron Lee won the 400 (52.49) and long jump (20-feet, 2 ¼ inches).

In the middle distance races, Griffen Wheeler won the 800 (1:56.63) and Carter Crouch was first in the 1600 (4:31.3).

Cash Looper won both hurdles races. He crossed the line first in the 110 high hurdles in 15.78 seconds and won the 300 low hurdles in 42.49 seconds.

Looper, Jack, John Stuckey and Austin Kincer were first in the 400 relay (45 seconds) and Jack, Michael Runions, Lee and Wheeler won the 1600 relay in 3:28.56.

Elliot Ryba cleared 6-feet, 5-inches to win the high jump. Looper added his fourth win by taking the pole vault (11-6) and Reese Hill won both throwing events (shot put – 49-5; discus – 142-feet).

Greenfield-Central competes in the Bob Potter Field Events Classic in Brownsburg Friday. Eastern Hancock will compete at Friday’s Park Tudor Small School Showcase.

Marauders double-up on Wildcats

Mt. Vernon’s boys track and field team defeated visiting Lawrence North 88-44 Tuesday at Mt. Vernon High School.

The Marauders will compete in the Marion Relays Saturday at 11 a.m.

Dragons win six events at Connersville

In a four-team boys track and field meet at Connersville, New Palestine won six individual events.

The Dragons had two double winners. Isaiah Thacker won the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. Jake Cooper won both the 800 and 1600 runs. Dylan Dragoo added a victory in the 400. Sage Halter won the pole vault.

The team is slated to compete today in a three-way meet, at home, with Greenwood and Perry Meridian.

Girls track and field

Dragons have double-winners

New Palestine’s girls track and field team won nine individual events at a four-team meet in Connersville Tuesday.

Courtney Study won the 800-meter and 1600-meter runs. Taylor Burke was victorious in both the 100 and 300 hurdles. Abby Journay earned top honors in the 400 and high jump.

The Dragons swept throws with Quin Lumbley winning the shot put and Sydney Miller taking the discus.

Cami Massari added a win in the 3200.

In the 4×400 relay, the Dragons finished 1-2 with McKenzie Hacker, Shaylee Frank, Study, Anne Bauer, Journay, Olivia Frank, Tylar Whitaker and Rylee Hurst.

The team is slated to compete today in a three-way meet, at home, with Greenwood and Perry Meridian.

G-C 2nd, EH 3rd at four-team event

Greenfield-Central scored 93 points and finished second to New Castle (101) at a four-team girls track and field event hosted by G-C Tuesday.

Eastern Hancock was fourth with 40 points. Scecina scored six.

For the Cougars, Savannah Lake won the 100-meter dash in 12.66 seconds and the 200 dash in 27.24.

The 4×100 meter relay team of Rachel Baker, Lauren Pechin, Jalyn Smith, and Lake placed first with a time of 53.38.

Juliann Jones won the 400 (1:04.62) and the long jump (15-feet).

And the 4×400 team of Jones, Reagan Crouch, Jorja Houston, and Lake won in a time 4:21.64.

The Cougars are back in action Wednesday at the Noblesville Invitational.

Boys golf

Marauders shoot 158 in win

In a nine-hole match against Triton Central at Ironwood Golf Course in Fishers, Mt. Vernon defeated the Tigers 158-208 Tuesday.

Nils Erkmanis was low Marauder with a 38. Brady Pearson shot 39. Dawson Perry finished with a 40 and Asher Cotton had a 41.

The team is scheduled to play at the Center Grove Invitational Saturday.

Eastern loses to New Castle

Eastern Hancock’s boys golf team lost 192-201 to New Castle Tuesday at Royal Hylands. Muncie Burris competed but did not have enough players for a team score.

For the Royals, Parker Atkins had low score with a 46.

Eastern Hancock takes on Daleville and Tri today at Crestview Golf Course.

Girls tennis

Marauders dominate Raiders

Mt. Vernon won all but four games in a 5-0 sweep of Shenandoah Wednesday.

The Marauders girls tennis team improved to 3-2 with the win.

Ava Lusby (6-2, 6-1), Joubert (6-0, 6-0) and Maria Downs (6-0, 6-0) won singles matches.

Kylie Brandes/Lugo (6-0, 6-0) and Maxwell/Lockwood (6-0, 6-1) won in doubles.

The Marauders are scheduled to host Shelbyville today.

Dragons defeat Tigers

New Palestine’s girls tennis team improved to 2-0 with a 3-2 victory over Triton Central Tuesday.

New Palestine got victories from both doubles teams.

The No. 1 group of Bethany Blachly/Jo Harvey won 6-0, 6-0. The No. 2 team of Alyssa Kauchak/Emily Appleby won 6-1, 6-0.

At No. 3 singles, Courtney Johnson won 6-0, 7-5.

At No. 1, Olivia Hasenkamp lost 6-4, 7-5. No. 2 Kaitlyn Mitchell was defeated 6-1, 6-3.

New Palestine was scheduled to play Roncalli Wednesday.

Cougars fall to Eagles

Greenfield-Central dropped its Hoosier Heritage Conference girls tennis opener 5-0 to Delta Monday.

At No. 1 singles, Jaclyn Layton lost 6-0, 6-1 to Gabby Knight. At No. 2, Brianna McConnell was defeated 6-1, 6-1 by Brylee Beckley. And, at No. 3, Madison Succaw lost 6-2, 6-1 to Iva Witter.

In doubles play, at No. 1, Emma Berty and Lauren Chastain lost 6-0, 6-0 to Janet Wegener and Katie Manor. At No. 2, Kammi Anderson and Hallie Smith lost 6-4, 6-3 to Kelsey Vest and Rowan Hinds.

The Cougars are scheduled to play at Warren Central Monday.

Boys volleyball

Dragons beat Artesians

New Palestine’s boys volleyball team, in a five-set marathon, defeated visiting Martinsville 3-2 Tuesday.

The Dragons won by set scores of 29-27, 16-25, 25-20, 22-25, 15-11.

New Palestine (5-7) travels to Franklin Central today.
