Mary J. Powers, 96, a lifelong resident and “Long-term Unofficial Mayor” of Charlottesville, went home to be with her Lord Jesus Christ at approximately 8:40am Tuesday, January 24, 2023 at Brickyard Brandywine Healthcare in Greenfield. She was born August 30, 1926 in Arlington, IN a daughter of the late Lee and Ruth (Brown) Silver.

An 83 year member of the Charlottesville Friends Church, Mary loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, above all else. She was a 1944 graduate of Charlottesville High School. On May 26, 1945, Mary married the love of her life, Fred M. “Tootie” Powers; they were married for 45 years until Tootie’s passing in 1990. Mary had been a longtime employee with the Charlottesville School and Eastern Hanco0ck Schools where she served students in the cafeteria. She had also managed Edna’s Corner Grocery in Charlottesville. Mary was a very loving person who enjoyed caring for her family. One of Mary’s favorite pastimes was joining her friends at the McDonald’s in Greenfield and this group was known as the “McDonald’s College of Knowledge”; they solved all the world’s problems during their visits together.

Mary is survived by her children, Fred (Becky) Powers of Greenfield, Vivian Smith of New Castle, Larry Powers of Indianapolis and Bob (Kathy) Powers of Cadillac, MI; grandchildren, Cathy (Mark) Gibson, Burke Aaric (Mindy) Smith, Heather (Harold) Seib, Holly (Theron) Carpenter, Jeremy (Kim) Powers, Erica (Jeff) Sincroft and Tacy (Rusty) Eadie, Ryan Patton; 17 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren; sister, Rowena (Jack) Holliday of Wilkinson; daughter-in-law, Deidre Powers of Greenfield.

In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Fred M. “Tootie” Powers; son, Gary Powers; grandsons, John Todd Smith, Brook Aaron Smith and Justin Powers; granddaughter, Emily Patton; siblings, Dorothy Martin, Norma Trinkle and Gene Silver.

Services will be held at 2:00pm Saturday, January 28, 2023 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in Knightstown. Burial will follow at Glen Cove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:00am until the time of service on Saturday.
