FORTVILLE – Seniors at Mt. Vernon High School interested in the medical field got a chance to practice drawing blood on Superintendent Dr. Jack Parker, Principal Bernie Campbell and more.

Students are in the Medical Assistant program, taken by seniors who have completed the Certified Nursing Assistant Course when they were juniors.

This is the second year the MA program has been offered at MVHS. Students learn the clinical and administrative aspects of being a medical assistant, said teacher Rikita Mason, including phlebotomy, shots, EKGs, vital signs, blood sugar checks, cultures, urine specimen collection and more.

They also learn administrative procedures, such as electronic medical records, front desk, billing and federal privacy laws.

Students practice drawing blood on a simulation arm prior to any attempts on humans. They then practice drawing blood on each other.

When students returned from winter break, they got a chance to practice on Parker, Campbell, Assistant Principal Stan Wilkison, teacher Mark Noesges and more.
