HANCOCK COUNTY — Reports of a stolen car landed an Ingalls man in hot water for that and other crimes after law enforcement was called to the Dollar General located at 425 W Broadway St., Fortville last week.

Travis Sean Smith, 46, 600 block of North East Street is facing a Level 5 felony count of intimidation, a Level 6 felony count of auto theft and a Class A Misdemeanor count of battery stemming from a Jan. 1 incident.

According to a probable cause affidavit, officials were called to the Dollar General store around 6:30 p.m. Jan. 1. That’s where a worker told police he was going to give a ride to a co-worker to Indianapolis to cash a check, but the co-worker (Smith) instead attacked him, threatened to kill him after pulling a knife, and took off in his vehicle.

Officials with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department later found the vehicle crashed and abandoned around 9 p.m. at the top of the ramp of I-74 East Bound at the 101-mile marker, the affidavit said.

Smith was arrested late last week and made his initial appearance in Hancock County Circuit Court Monday, Jan. 9. Judge Scott Sirk set a $3,000 cash bond and issued a no contact order in the case. Smith is due back in court for a pretrial conference Tuesday, Feb. 7.
