Motown show seeks local young singers

GREENFIELD – Local talented youth are sought for auditions for an upcoming Motown show at the H.J. Ricks Centre for the Arts.

Auditions for “Motown Forever: Presented by Frederic & Ronza” are 6:30-7:30 p.m. Jan. 16 and 17 at the downtown theater. The artists are seeking Greenfield area youth ages 8-14 to try out for two roles available in a Jackson 5 group. Prepare 24 bars of a Jackson 5 song to sing, acapella. Singers not chosen can be part of the community choir.

The performance is scheduled for Feb. 24.

Master gardener virtual classes coming

HANCOCK COUNTY – Purdue Extension will host a statewide virtual basic training for the Purdue Extension Master Gardener Program.

Live webinars will be Tuesday evenings, Feb. 7 through May 9. Topics include plant science, soils and nutrition, invasive species, insects, weeds, animal pests, pesticides, ornamentals, fruit gardening, lawn care, vegetable gardening and more. Weekly local connection hours are available; the time, date and place for the local connection wll be determined by the Hancock County office. For more, email [email protected].

Silent auction to raise money for classrooms

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Eastern Hancock Education Foundation will raise funds for annual teacher and classroom grants at a EHEF Silent Auction this Saturday, Jan. 14. The event is during the home varsity boys basketball game. The foundation will auction baked goods, homemade pies, candy, craft/homemade items, themed baskets, gift cards and even a pedal tractor. Bidding begins in the third quarter of the game against Greenfield-Central.

Programs for children, teens at local libraries

HANCOCK COUNTY – Local libraries in Hancock County have several programs for children and teens lined up this month.

Children’s programming in January at the Hancock County Public Library in Greenfield includes a superhero party Jan. 19 for grades K-5; and preschool snowman painting Jan. 30. Children at the New Palestine branch can participate in a popcorn day party Jan. 18. Weekly storytimes are also available at both branches for children ages 6 and younger. Teen programming includes several craft events, as well as a teen afternoon hangout Jan. 11 in Greenfield. Teens are also invited to take photographs of a stuffed animal slumber party Jan. 24. In New Palestine, a homeschool middle school girls book club is scheduled for Jan. 27 with a Harry Potter book. Movies and Mugs will be Jan. 31, featuring a movie, snacks and mugs created with Sharpie oil markers.

The Fortville-Vernon Township Public Library is challenging patrons to read 1,000 books to their young children before starting kindergarten, or join the Book-opoly Reading Program this winter.

Teens and tweens may want to join in on “Bad Art Night” to create a heinous piece Jan. 18. The library will also host a homeschool geography club Jan. 27. Learn more at fvtpl.org.
