New Palestine’s Sydney DeLois won a regional championship and four other Hancock County wrestlers earned spots in this week’s Indiana High School Girls Wrestling State Finals at Mooresville High School.

DeLois won five matches by fall to take first place in the 120-pound class at Friday’s Warren Central Regional.

Also advancing for the Dragons were Madisyn Covington, third in the 145-pound class and Julia Champ was a runner-up at 160.

Greenfield-Central advanced two wrestlers Kylie Smith-Foster (113) and Ella Harpold (170) both placed second.

As a team, New Palestine placed ninth with 80 points. Greenfield-Central was 11th with 75. Warren Central (163) edged Southport (161) for first.

The state finals are scheduled for Friday.

Boys basketball

Marauders defeat Warriors

After two losses earlier in the week, Mt. Vernon (8-5) bounced back with a 74-62 victory at Whiteland Saturday.

Four Marauders scored in double figures, led by freshman Julien Smith with 20 points. Eli Bridenthal added 14. Luke Ertel scored 13 and Adam Hackett added 11.

The Marauders return to action Friday with a home game against Avon.

Girls basketball

Royals win fifth straight

Eastern Hancock’s girls basketball team won for the fifth straight time, defeating visiting Union County 41-22 Saturday.

It was the ninth time this season Eastern Hancock (14-3) has held an opponent under 30 points.

The game was tied 10-10 at halftime. The Royals came out in the second half and outscored the Patriots 16-2 in the third quarter.

Sammie Bolding led the way for Eastern Hancock, scoring 20 points. Ruby White added six.

The Royals return to action Tuesday with a home game against New Castle.

Boys wrestling

Marauder grapplers go 5-0

Mt. Vernon’s boys wrestling team won all five its matches at the Jennings County Duals Saturday.

All five were convincing victories.

Mt. Vernon defeated Greenwood (63-4), West Washington (78-3), Seymour (72-6), Jennings County (58-19) and Decatur Central (58-18).

The Marauders return to action Wednesday with a home match against North Central.

Royals win four matches

In the two-day Wayne County Wrestling Classic at Centerville, Eastern Hancock’s boys wrestling team went 4-4 in the dual-format event held Friday and Saturday.

Five of the eight matches were decided by 12 points or less.

Eastern Hancock earned wins over Monroe Central (42-33), Tri (42-33), Union County (36-34) and Hagerstown (60-18). The Royals lost to Chatard (56-15) Centerville (45-36), Winchester (48-36) and Beech Grove (48-33).

Eastern Hancock is back in action today at Knightstown.

Girls swimming

Eastern leads the way at Elwood

Eastern Hancock’s girls swimming team won a triangular meet at Elwood High School Thursday.

The Royals won with 84 points. Blackford finished second with 50. Elwood scored 45 points.

Eastern is 13-8 on the season and host Bishop Chatard Thursday.

Boys swimming

Royals place third

In a four-team competition at the Elwood High School pool, the Eastern Hancock boys swimming team placed third.

Blackford won the meet with 62 points. Elwood edged Eastern for second 44-40. Frankton scored 14 points.

The Royals are 3-15 on the season and host Bishop Chatard Thursday.
