A misconduct point deducted from Franklin Central proved to be the difference in New Palestine’s 30-29 victory over the Flashes at New Palestine High School Thursday.

Both teams scored 30 points in match competitions, but Franklin Central was deducted one point for misconduct following the 182-pound match, won 3-2 by Franklin Central’s Jeremiah Smith over New Palestine’s Colin Whetsel.

The Dragons won eight of the 14 matches, opening the night with back-to-back wins from Isaac Poetz (145) and Jaedyn Jeffries (152). Poetz beat Tim Ruley by fall in 3:14. Jeffries had a 10-0 major decision over Jeremiah Tindal.

Franklin Central won the next three before New Palestine’s Shaun Glass picked up a 9-2 win over Julius Parker at 195.

The Flashes grabbed the next two prior to the Dragons taking five of the final six bouts.

Strong at the smaller weights, New Pal’s Gunner Butt got things going at 106 with a 5-2 victory over Richard Rodgers. Cole Vandygriff (113) followed with a 13-2 win over Demario Ezeil. Bryce Doss made it three straight with a 7-3 triumph over Amin Mardanzani at 120.

The Dragons won the last two matches of the night. Jack Rossell (132) squeaked out a 5-4 win over Nate Kemp. Elijah Alonso (138) finished it off with a 5-1 victory over Moses Stevenson.

New Palestine is back in action Wednesday at Lawrence North.

Girls basketball

Mt. Vernon wins big at Mississinewa

Ellery Minch scored 20 points and had 10 rebounds to lead Mt. Vernon’s girls basketball team to a 53-22 victory at Mississinewa (4-13) Thursday.

Following Minch, Easton Wampler had 12 points and four rebounds. Khloe Patterson scored 10 points and Kaitlyn Laffey had six points and five assists.

Mt. Vernon (12-5) welcomes Class 4A No. 5 Noblesville (14-3) Tuesday.

Girls swimming

Royals win invitational

Eastern Hancock’s girls swimming team started off 2023 with a victory in Tuesday’s Indian Creek Invitational.

The Royals were first out of five teams. They were scheduled to compete Thursday at Elwood against the host school and Blackford. Next up is a Thursday meet, at home, against Bishop Chatard.

Eastern finishes third

Eastern Hancock’s boys swimming team opened the 2023 portion of the season with a third place finish at Tuesday’s Indian Creek Invitational.

The Royals were third out of five teams. They were scheduled to compete Thursday at Elwood against the host school and Blackford. They will host Bishop Chatard next Thursday.
