Mt. Vernon girls finish fifth at Twin Lakes

In Wednesday’s consolation round, Mt. Vernon’s girls basketball team went 2-0 and placed fifth at the Twin Lakes Tournament in Monticello.

In a 38-18 win in the morning over North White (3-12), Khloe Patterson had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. She also had six steals.

Ellery Minch had 11 points and nine rebounds. Kanyonrae Kenny finished with six points and five rebounds and Aya Renforth scored five points.

In the fifth-place game against Clinton Prairie (9-7), Mt. Vernon (11-5) won 36-26.

Minch had 16 points, five rebounds and two steals. Patterson finished with eight points and nine boards. Kenny had 12 points, seven rebounds and seven steals.

Minch was selected to the all-tournament team.

The Marauders return to action Thursday, Jan. 4 at Mississinewa (4-10).

Cougars win, Brown named all-tournament

Greenfield-Central (9-7) defeated Lowell 60-55 in the fifth-place game of the Lebanon Bloom Bank Classic girls basketball tournament Wednesday.

The Cougars went 2-1 in the two-day, eight-team tournament.

Against Lowell, sophomore Chaney Brown, who was named to the all-tournament team, led Greenfield-Central scoring with 20 points, including 10 in the third quarter.

Senior Aryana Hibbard had 10 of her 13 points in the first half. She hit three 3-pointers. Junior Katie Holmes had 10 points.

The Cougars extended their lead at the end of the first three quarters, then had to hold on at the end.

G-C led 13-10 at the first break and 29-20 at halftime. Heading into the final period, the Cougars had a 49-34 advantage. Lowell (6-8) outscored Greenfield-Central 21-11 in the final quarter.

The Cougars return to action Jan. 3 at Perry Meridian (1-10).

Boys basketball

Royals fall in double OT, place 7th at Wettig

Eastern Hancock defeated Heritage 61-53 to win the seventh-place game of the Bob Wettig Memorial Tournament Wednesday at IU-East.

Earlier in the day, the Royals lost to Class 1A No. 10 Indianapolis Tindley in double overtime 66-61, at Richmond High School’s Tiernan Center.

Eastern Hancock, ranked No. 6 in Class 2A, went 2-2 in the two-day, 12-team event.

Against Heritage, the Royals led by one point at the end of the first quarter and halftime. They took a three-point lead, 45-42, into the final quarter.

The Royals were led by the Spaulding twins, Jacob and Silas. They combined for 43 points in the win. Jacob had 23, including three 3s. Silas finished with 20 and four treys. Edric Miller added nine points.

Against Tindley, Silas Spaulding led with 15 points.

He hit four 3s, including three in the third quarter, when the Royals erased a seven-point halftime deficit to take a 40-39 lead into the final quarter.

In all, four EH players scored in double figures. Miller had 14. Grant Gray scored 13 and Jacob Spaulding finished with 10.

Eastern Hancock (8-3, 3-0) returns to Mid-Eastern Conference play Jan. 6 with a game at No. 8 Wapahani (7-1, 1-0).

Girls wrestling

G-C 15th at Hildebrandt

Greenfield-Central’s girls wrestling team placed 15th out of 56 teams at the Sarah Hildebrandt Invitational at Mishawaka Penn High School Wednesday.

The Cougars scored 53 points. Leading the way was 113-pound class wrestler Kylie Smith-Foster.

She finished second in the 113-A division and first in the 113 3rd/4th place division. Smith-Foster went 3-1 on the day with all three wins by fall.

Ella Harpold was fourth in the 160-pound class. She was 2-2 with two falls.

Mandy Reed was sixth at 152, finishing the day with a 3-2 record. All three of her wins were pins.

Molly Hutchinson was eighth at 138-A. She finished 1-3 with a win by fall.

The next competition is at the Warren Central Regional on Jan. 6.
