Former New Palestine all-state running back Charlie Spegal, the state’s 2019 Mr. Football, all-time leading rusher and holder of multiple state rushing and scoring records, has committed to play football at Ball State University.

Spegal announced his plans on his Twitter page Monday.

Spegal led the Dragons to back-to-back IHSAA Class 5A state titles. He will be joining former state champion teammate defensive lineman Kyle King, who was a Mr. Football position winner in his final year with New Palestine.

Spegal graduated from New Palestine in 2020 and was an invited walk-on at Indiana University. He was redshirted in 2020 and played in four games in 2021, rushing 19 times for 62 yards. He appeared in eight games this fall for the Hoosiers, playing primarily on special teams.

After the season, Spegal announced on Twitter he planned on transferring to a different school.

Along with Spegal and King, New Palestine senior wide receiver Isaiah Thacker signed a letter-of-intent to become a Ball State Cardinal last week.

Games rescheduled

New Palestine’s girls basketball game scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 22, at home, against Southport, was postponed due to inclement weather.

The game has been rescheduled to be played on Saturday, Jan. 21 with a noon start for the junior varsity game.
