HANCOCK COUNTY — A Wilkinson man out on parole for dealing drugs is now facing a serious felony gun charge and other drug charges following his recent arrest earlier this week.

Cody Edward Bever, 28, Wilkinson, made an initial appearance in Hancock County Circuit Court Wednesday, Dec. 7. He’s been charged with a Level 4 count of unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon and three different Level 6 felony drug charges for possession of methamphetamine and possession of a controlled substance from an incident Monday, Dec. 5.

The court, via senior judge Donald E. Currie, set a cash bond in the amount of $10,000 cash and appointed a public defender. Bever was still listed as an inmate in the county jail as of press time. He is slated to be back in court for a pretrial conference at the end of January.

According to a probable cause affidavit, an officer with the Greenfield Police Department in the 2100 block of State Street observed a SUV that did not have a license plate on the vehicle around 11:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 5. The officer initiated emergency lights and conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of Broadway Street and New Road.

The report noted Bever was driving the SUV and said he did not a have driver’s license and was on his way to work. The officer stated he could see Bever’s hands shaking and asked Bever if there were any weapons in the vehicle.

“I observed Bever’s eyes get big and he stated ‘no’ very quickly,” the officer said in the report. After running a check on Bever, the officer found out Bever was on parole and had a case of possession and dealing drugs against him, the affidavit said.

Bever then told the officer he was on parole for dealing heroine, the report said. Bever then gave the officer permission to search his vehicle saying he was in a hurry and needed to get to work. That’s when officials located a gun under the driver’s seat and found a cut straw with a white powdery residue inside of it in the driver side door, the report said.

When the officer asked Bever what was up with the straw, Bever told the officer he was a drug addict, the report stated. Bever went on to tell officials he had heroine, methamphetamine and pills in the vehicle.

Officers were able to find a bag and located multiple clear and red transparent plastic baggies. Inside the clear and red plastic baggies was a white powdery substance, a crystal-like substance and multiple white and blue pills, officials said in the report.

Bever was transported to the Hancock County Jail.
