GREENFIELD — Officials with the Greenfield Police Department are investigating a shooting incident over the long holiday weekend where it appears a teenager shot himself in the leg during a party where drugs and alcohol were present.

According to officials with the GPD, officers were called to the 1100 block of W. 7th Street, around 1:10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 3 with reports of a person shot, GPD, Deputy Chief Chuck McMichael said.

Upon arrival, officers found there were approximately 10 teenagers at the house and one of them, a 16-year-old boy, had a gunshot wound to the leg. An officer immediately rendered aid and applied a tourniquet to the leg to stop the bleeding. The teenage boy was transported to an Indianapolis hospital for treatment and is still in the hospital listed in stable condition at last check just prior to print time Tuesday.

Officials say it appears the gunshot wound was self-inflicted and accidental.

“We are still investigating to determine where the gun came from and why the boy had it,” McMichael said.

During their investigation, law enforcement officials noted illegal drugs and alcohol were present in the home at the time of the incident where several teenagers were.

“All of these factors are still being investigated,” McMichael said. “Criminal charges are possible upon completion of the investigation.”

Officials noted they’ve been seeing plenty of underage drug and alcohol use as of late, and they are asking parents to keep a better eye on the children and have knowledge of where their kids are, who they are with and what they are doing at all times.

“We have had several serious incidents in the past few months with teenagers,” McMichael said.
