Marauders lead the elite

In a 15-team field that included five state-ranked teams from last week’s Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches (IATCCC) poll, Mt. Vernon won the Elite Race at the Marion Invitational, hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University Saturday.

The Marauders came in No. 24 — the lowest rated of the five ranked programs — but came out on top of the field of 15 that consisted of No. 6 Brebeuf, No. 16 Chesterton, No. 19 Warsaw, No. 22 North Central and 10 others.

In a close race, Mt. Vernon won with 104 points. Chesterton had 111. Warsaw was third with 125. Homestead placed fourth with 139. Lawrence North had 187.

Mt. Vernon’s Tristan Trevino was fourth overall with a time of 15:50.90. Ezra Burrell of Brebeuf won in 15:40.40.

For the Marauders, following Trevino, Ahmed Saleh was 14th in 16:38.90. Colin Strachman finished 19th in 16:46.40. Isaiah Njau crossed the line in 31st in 17:02.90. Landon Willis clocked in at 17:08.80 for 36th.

Austin Baugh placed 43rd in 17:17.70. Jackson Dayhoff finished 46th in 17:20. Xaiden Jenson was 53rd in 17:24.80.

Andres Langston and Caden Cassada were 85th and 86th, respectively. Langston finished in 18:03. Cassada clocked in at 18:03.90.

Rounding out the Marauder runners, Daylon King was 95th in 18:15.80. Brayden Strantz placed 97th in 18:17.70.

There were 168 runners in the event.

The Marauders will compete in the Mason (Ohio) Invitational on Saturday.

Royals place sixth in Gold Race

In the Gold Race at the Marion Invitational hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University, Eastern Hancock finished sixth out of 15 teams Saturday.

The Royals scored 185 points and were just four points behind third-place Southern Wells. Northeastern won with 70 and Clinton Prairie scored 77.

Southern Wells led a tight race from third to eighth with 181 points. It was followed by Muncie Burris (183), Monroe Central (184), Eastern Hancock (185), Churubusco (196) and Tipton (198).

Individually for the Royals, they had two Top 10 runners.

Preston Markley was seventh in 17:13.50. Brandon Metz placed 10th in 17:16.80. Both were career-best times and ranked among the Top 10 times for 5Ks in school history.

John Henry Gray finished 50th in 19:27.0. Caden Powers placed 60th in 19:44.40. Andrew Metz finished in 64th with a time of 19:51.90. All three ran career-best times, too.

Eastern Hancock will return to IWU this Saturday for the Wildcat Invitational.

Dragons finish eighth in Purple Race

Out of 17 teams in the Purple Race at the Marion Invitational hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University, New Palestine finished in eighth place Saturday.

Leo won the event with a score of 103. Richmond was second with 118.

The Dragons scored 224.

Cody Crawmer was New Palestine’s top runner. He placed 26th in 17:58.50. Gavin Smith was 31st in 18:01.70. Jacob Cooper was close behind in 37th with a time of 18:05.

Jacob Collins was 56th in 18:50.10.

Isaac Poetz placed 79th in 19:21. Charlie Rigsbee finished 91st in 19:47.10. Hayden Taylor crossed in 106th at 20:09.20. Sam Ragsdale was 109th in 20:13.80. Cameron Mann finished 113th in 20:28.30.

Kendall Steele was 125th in 20:56. Crossing in 140th place was Ethan Galster in 21:44.70. Ayden Rush was 163rd with a time of 23:33.80.

There were 174 runners in the race.

New Palestine will run in the Whiteland Invitational on Saturday.

Columbus race canceled

The Rick Weinheimer Cross Country Classic, hosted by Columbus North High School was canceled.

Greenfield-Central was scheduled to compete in the 5K race.

G-C hosts Cougarpalooza Wednesday 5 p.m. at Brandywine Park.

Girls cross country

Mt. Vernon finishes eighth at IWU

Mt. Vernon placed eighth at the Chuck Schlemmer Elite Race, part of the Marion Invitational hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University Saturday.

The Marauders were eighth in a 12-team field.

North Central, ranked No. 8 in the IATCCC poll, won with 45 points. No. 5 Homestead was second with 52. Mt. Vernon had 215, and was led by freshman Hannah Hauser. She placed 10th in a field of 130 with a 5K time of 19:25.90.

Emma Gale was 33rd in 20:28. Alexandria Jenson was 56th with a time of 21:06.90. Melinda Cornelius followed with a 65th place finish and time of 21:19.80. Julia Iserloth crossed the line in 74th place with a time of 21:33.

Kenydi Russell placed 103rd in 22:44.10. Madelyn Ludlow clocked in at 23:47.50 and finished 115th. Emily Xiao was 128th with an official time of 28:36.71. Hannah Eads finished in 30:05.90 and was 130th.

The Marauders will compete in the Mason (Ohio) Invitational on Saturday.

Dragons 14th in invitational

In the Purple Race of the Marion Invitational at Indiana Wesleyan University Saturday, New Palestine’s girls finished 14th out of 20 teams.

The Dragons had 306 points. Maconaquah won the race with 85 points Angola was second in 123.

Courtney Study led the way for the Dragons by finishing 18th with a time of 21:22.40. Cami Massari was 57th with a time of 22:52.90. Lexi Baynes finished 62nd in 23:01.30.

Edie Schwarb was next in 84th with a time of 24:08.30. Heidi Bloomer came across the finish line 89th with a time of 24:19.60

Lily Westrate finished 134th in 26:52.30. Aislyn Garrett was 146th in 28:00.50. Sophia Reilly finished 154th in 28:55.40. Marley Ragsdale placed 157th in 29:09.40.

New Palestine will run in the Whiteland Invitational on Saturday.

Columbus Classic Canceled

Marauders win Richmond Invitational

Mt. Vernon finished first in the weather-shortened eight-team Richmond Invitational Saturday.

The Marauders had 27 points. Connersville was second with 17.

In singles play, No. 1 Adam Koon and No. 2 Manny Downs each went 2-0. No. 3 Tate Cougill went 1-0.

In doubles, the No. 1 team of Robbie Moore and Bryndan Wylie went 1-0. The No. 2 group of Matthew Jones and Max Orelup went 2-0.

The Marauders will travel to Greenfield-Central Tuesday.

Volleyball

G-C goes 0-3 at Shondell Tournament

At the Shondell Family Invitational, at Muncie Burris School on Saturday, Greenfield-Central went 0-3.

Opening against the hosts, G-C lost 2-0 by set scores of 25-23, 25-8. Mya Grigsby had seven kills. Makenna Rankins had 18 assists.

The Cougars followed by dropping a 2-0 decision to Evansville Memorial. Set scores were 25-19, 25-19. Rilee Roland had five kills. Rankins had 19 assists.

Against Fairfield, G-C was defeated 2-0 by scores of 25-20, 25-15. Roland had four kills and Rankins had 11 assists.

Greenfield-Central (4-7) plays Tuesday at Cowan.

Girls soccer

NP match postponed

New Palestine’s Hoosier Heritage Conference match at Shelbyville, scheduled to be played last Saturday morning, was postponed.

A makeup date has not been determined.
