GREENFIELD — A fast, casual restaurant that’s part of a national chain is coming to Greenfield.

The business is the second planned addition to a commercial site off one of the city’s thoroughfares following the property’s recent acquisition by a local development firm.

A McAlister’s Deli location will occupy about 3,429 square feet of the approximately 7,000- to 9,000-square-foot multi-tenant retail building Greenfield-based Greenwalt Development is planning in McKenzie Plaza on State Street’s west side north of McKenzie Road. The building is slated for the southeast corner of the parcel at 1240 N. State St. in McKenzie Plaza, which includes a building that formerly housed a Marsh Supermarket location.

Final plans are being completed and the construction of the multi-tenant building is scheduled to begin in fall 2022, according to a news release from Greenwalt Development. McAlister’s Deli is anticipated to open in mid-2023.

Southern Rock Restaurants, based in Franklin, Tennessee, will operate the McAlister’s Deli. The company operates over 100 locations of the franchise in eight states, including Indiana.

Greenwalt Development recently acquired the approximately 38,000-square-foot building that formerly housed the Marsh Supermarket. The developer plans to redevelop that building into a multi-tenant space, and recently signed Great Lakes Ace Hardware to lease 18,000 square feet on the structure’s south end, with an opening anticipated early next year. Greenwalt Development hopes to fill the remaining space with one to two more tenants. The firm also owns the shopping center in McKenzie Plaza north of the former Marsh building and the medical office building to the south, as well as outlots in McKenzie Plaza housing AT&T, Don Rigo Mexican Bar & Grill and Jimmy John’s.

“We are pleased to be adding a nationally recognized brand like McAlister’s Deli as a crucial component of our redevelopment of McKenzie Plaza,” Aaron Greenwalt of Greenwalt Development said in a news release.
