HANCOCK COUNTY — Free food and fun are on the agenda for two upcoming community night events in Hancock County.

Between 3,000 and 4,000 people are expected to attend the annual Hancock County Community Night, at the county fairgrounds from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 27.

The family-friendly event — which includes school supply giveaways — is held each year to kick off the new school year.

Attendees will get the chance to visit with local police and fire department staff who will perform live demonstrations.

First responders will also be on hand at the McCordsville Police Department’s Community Day, Aug. 5 at McCordsville Town Hall Park.

“It’s a great time for the community to come out and see us not just as police officers, but as human beings,” said the town’s assistant police chief, Jim Bell.

Both community events are designed as a way to bring people together.

“It’s a great opportunity for people in the community to benefit from resources offered by organizations all in one spot,” said Mikel Theobald, a co-organizer for the Hancock County Community Night.

Theobald, who serves as co-director for the nonprofit Hancock4Kids, will be among the many vendors on hand sharing information and resources.

“It’s definitely a great place for kids to come get backpacks and school supplies and some other fun giveaways, and be exposed to a variety of organizations. It’s just a lot of fun,” she said. The event also offers free food and raffles, with prizes like new bikes up for grabs.

What started out as a safety fair in the Walmart parking lot has grown over the years into a massive event at the Hancock County Fairgrounds, at 620 Apple St. in Greenfield.

“Our booth sees constant traffic with people stopping by,” said Theobald.

The McCordsville Community Day gives visitors the chance to get up close and personal with first responders as well as police cruisers and fire trucks. Guests can even meet the police department’s K-9, Mattis.

The event also offers free food and a Monster Truck show, all at the McCordsville Town Hall Park, at 6280 W. 800 North. Those who are able are asked to bring nonperishable food items to be shared with the community.

“It’s going to be a good time,” said Bell, who looks forward to the event each year.

“It’s all about giving back to the community. They support us, so we want to support them,” he said.
