Music at Mohawk begins tonight

MOHAWK — A series of free, family-friendly music events begins Saturday (June 25) on the west lawn and shelter house of Mohawk United Methodist Church, 2045 W. County Road 400N, Greenfield, adjacent to the children’s play area.

Patchwork, a husband-wife acoustic duo, will play from 6-8 p.m. Featuring a mix of traditional and contemporary folk music, as well as a healthy dose of gospel and original music, Patchwork’s style is best described as “down home.”

They both sing. Holly Garrett plays fiddle and mandolin. Rick Garrett plays guitar, hammer dulcimer and mountain dulcimer.

People are encouraged to bring seating such as blankets or lawn chairs, as provided seating is limited to a few picnic tables. There will also be a “tip jar” so folks can show appreciation for each group and help offset costs.

The series continues at 6 p.m. July 9 with Anna Owens and at 6 p.m. Aug. 13 with The Occasional Blues Band.

One week remains to support pantry at grocery checkout

CUMBERLAND — Community Outreach Ministry Eastside (COME) hopes grocery shoppers will donate at the store to help the food pantry the ministry operates out of Cumberland First Baptist Church.

Through Meijer’s Simply Give campaign, shoppers can pick up a gift card near the checkout, give it to the cashier, and indicate how much they wish to donate. Donations at the Cumberland Meijer (11315 East Washington St.) will support the COME pantry. The program runs through July 2.

Eight member churches in Hancock and Marion counties form COME and also support the pantry. The pantry is open from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesdays at Cumberland First Baptist Church, 116 S. Muessing. The pantry serves residents of Buck Creek and Sugar Creek townships in Hancock County, as well as residents of Warren Township in Marion County.

Comfort Church, St. John United Church of Christ in Cumberland and St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Indianapolis.
