Prep Roundup: Dragons, Cougars, Marauders advance to track state

INDIANAPOLIS — Hancock County will have eight athletes representing the area during the 2022 Indiana High School Athletic Association girls track and field state finals in Bloomington next week.

The New Palestine Dragons pushed two athletes through to the state meet, while the Greenfield-Central Cougars will have two competitors.

The Mt. Vernon 4×800-meter relay team also qualified for the state finals on Friday, June 3 to be conducted at the Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex on the campus of Indiana University.

The Mt. Vernon relay group of Emma Gasiorek, Lydia Carrell, Morgan Tharp and Alexandra Overshiner placed third at the Ben Davis Regional on Tuesday with a time of 9 minutes, 56.98 seconds to qualify for the state meet.

The top-three finishers at each regional site in each event earned automatic advancement to the IHSAA state finals.

New Palestine’s Sydney Miller and Quin Lumbley both advanced out of Tuesday’s Franklin Regional.

Miller finished third in the discus at regional with a state-qualifying throw of 129-feet, 11-inches. She was one of five throwers who exceeded the state standard of 127 feet.

Lumbley will compete in the shot put at the state finals after posting a regional throw of 41-7.5. She placed fourth at regional but advanced by exceeding the state-qualifying standard of 40-9.25.

Greenfield-Central’s Savannah Lake advanced in the 100-meter dash during the Franklin Regional. She finished third with a PR time of 12.62.

Kayana Maroska qualified in two events for the state meet. She placed third in the 400 with a PR time of 58.60. Maroska also finished third in the 200, running in a school-record time of 25.53.

The school’s previous 200 record was 25.80, which has stood since 1981.

The IHSAA girls track and field state meet will begin at 3 p.m. on Friday, June 3, with the pole vault competition. Running events are scheduled to start at 4:15 p.m. with the 4×800 relay.

Marauders fall at regional

The sectional champion Mt. Vernon girls tennis team’s season came to a close on Tuesday at the Lawrence North Regional.

The Marauders lost to host Wildcats, 4-1, in the regional semifinals but will have two competitors advance.

Seniors Olivia Lugo and Cecilia Bulmahn won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles to move on to the IHSAA individual state tournament.

Mt. Vernon’s Kylie Brandes lost her regional match at No. 1 singles, 3-6, 1-6. Carly Wilkerson lost at No. 2 singles, 2-6, 0-6. Anna Hawks fell at No. 3 singles, 1-6, 1-6.

Shay Shipley and Maddie Swingle lost a hard-fought, three-set match at No. 2 doubles, 6-4, 4-6, 8-10.

The Marauders (16-7) won their eighth consecutive sectional team title this year and 16th overall. They also extended their county team title streak to 12 straight.
