Donations at grocery will aid food pantry

CUMBERLAND — Community Outreach Ministry Eastside (COME) hopes grocery shoppers will donate at the store to help the food pantry the ministry operates out of Cumberland First Baptist Church.

Through Meijer’s Simply Give campaign, shoppers can pick up a gift card near the checkout, give it to the cashier, and indicate how much they wish to donate. Donations at the Cumberland Meijer (11315 East Washington St.) will support the COME pantry. The program runs through July 2.

Eight member churches in Hancock and Marion counties form COME and also support the pantry. The pantry is open from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesdays at Cumberland First Baptist Church, 116 S. Muessing. The pantry serves residents of Buck Creek and Sugar Creek townships in Hancock County, as well as residents of Warren Township in Marion County.

Pantry leaders also encourage donating on a double-match day, June 18. On that Saturday, Meijer will double any donation you make. If you spend $10, Meijer will give $20, which results in your donation being increased to $30.

Pantry leaders point out the Simply Give program has generated more than $70 million in food donations for more than 230 food pantries in the Midwest since 2008.
