Prep Roundup: Royals sweep past Owls

MUNCIE — The Eastern Hancock girls tennis team took care of business at Muncie Burris on Tuesday night.

The visiting Royals swept the evening, winning four matches in straight sets against the host Owls and another in three.

Bianca Di Vittorio won at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-1, while Violette Sagalowicz prevailed at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-3. Tori Parker completed the singles sweep at No. 3 with a solid 6-4, 6-4 victory.

The No. 1 doubles team of Savanah Hardin and Lexi Swauger won 6-0, 6-3, followed by Tori Parker and Mikayla Hardy at No. 2 doubles, 6-7 (2-7), 6-1, 6-1.

Marauders fall to Tigers

The defending Hancock County champion Mt. Vernon girls tennis team lost a tough match to visiting Alexandria, 3-2, on Monday night.

The Marauders fell short despite winning two of three singles matches.

Kylie Brandes continued her strong season at No. 1 singles, claiming her match 6-0, 6-0. Carly Wilkerson won at No. 2 singles, 7-5, 6-0.

From there, the Tigers took control.

Mt. Vernon’s Liv Lugo and CeCe Bulmahn lost 3-6, 1-6 at No. 1 doubles, while Maddie Swingle and Shay Shipley lost 4-6, 3-6 at two doubles.

Anna Hawks tried to help the Marauders rally back at No. 3 singles, but her opponent charged back to win, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

“One word, disappointing. Disappointed in the our energy, our preparation, our play and our teamwork,” Mt. Vernon head coach Gabe Muterspaugh said. “Alexandria is well coached, played with high energy and they were mentally tougher than us.”

Mt. Vernon is now 9-2 on the season and head to Hoosier Heritage Conference foe Yorktown today.

Dragons slip past Cougars

The New Palestine tennis team remained unbeaten in dual matches Tuesday with a 3-2 home victory over Greenfield-Central.

The Dragons are now 6-0 overall and 3-0 in Hoosier Heritage Conference play.

Abby Blachly had an outstanding performance at No. 1 singles, winning 6-0, 6-3. Olivia Hasenkamp remained unbeaten with a 7-5, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles. At No. 2 doubles, Lily Haeberle/Bethany Blachly won 6-2, 6-3 to clinch the match.

Softball

Dragons rout Trojans

The New Palestine softball team was dominant offensively, scoring multiple runs in each inning of Tuesday’s 18-4 home victory over HHC foe New Castle.

The victory improves the fourth-ranked Dragons’ record to 10-0-1 (2-0 HHC) and pushes their winning streak to 10 straight.

The Dragons scored twice in the first inning and added five runs in the second, keyed by RBI doubles from Grace Paquette and Alaina Miller.

Paquette then hit a two-run double to key an eight-run third that gave the Dragons a 15-1 edge. Maddie Engle, Allie Blum and Reese Rosenbaum had RBI hits in the inning and Katie Hirschy added a two-run double. Three more runs came home in the fourth on RBI singles from Hirschy and Miller and a run-scoring double by Rosenbaum.

Katie Kottlowski earned the pitching win, allowing four hits and no earned runs in three innings, fanning three. Courtney Study pitched the final two innings, also striking out three and scattering four hits and three earned runs.

Nine players tallied hits for the Dragons, led by Miller, who was 3-for-3 with four runs and two RBI. She hit one of the Dragons’ five doubles. Hirschy was 3-for-4 with a run, a double and three RBI. Paquette was 2-for-4 with two runs, two doubles and three RBI. Engle was 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI. Rosenbaum was also 2-for-2 with a double, a run and two RBI. BLum was 1-for-3 with two runs. Aglaia Rudd was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Nyla Lewis was 1-for-1 with two runs. Alexa Holman also drove in a run.

Cougars blast Eagles

The Greenfield-Central Cougars opened their HHC schedule with a five-inning, 23-6, run-rule victory at Delta on Tuesday.

The win improved G-C’s season record to 7-3 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

The Cougars led 3-1 after the first inning and 5-4 after two frames before erupting for 16 runs in the top of the third en route to their third straight win.

In total, the Cougars logged 19 hits and drove in 21 runs with Faith Butler leading the onslaught by finishing 3-for-4 with five RBI.

Addison Herrin went 4-for-5 with four RBI, Ella Redman was 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Morgan Hornaday (1-for-2), Megan Wineinger (2-for-3) and Josie White (3-for-5) each drove in two runs.

Olivia Roberts (1-for-3), Lilly Stewart (1-for-3) and Leileanna Faitele each had one RBI apiece.

Roberts and Butler each slugged one home run. Redman had two doubles and Herrin had the team’s third double. White and Herrin each stole a base.

Madysen Herbert and Butler combined for two strikeouts and two walks through five innings pitched. The duo surrendered 11 hits.

Golf

Dragons cruise to victory

The New Palestine golf team had two players in the 30s Tuesday in a 164-172 victory over Greenwood Christian at Hawk’s Tail.

Matthew Barada shot 38 and Braeden Baker 39 on the par-36 course. Evan Griffith added a 43. Landon Beaty and Alex Cofer each shot 44s.

Cougars best Lions

The Greenfield-Central boys golf team picked up its first win of the season at Rushville, 191-206, Tuesday night.

Josh Alley continued his strong play to start the season to lead all golfers with a 44. Avery and Tyler Young followed with a 48 and 49, respectively. Jonathan Smith shot a 50.
