John Hawkins

GREENFIELD

John Wesley Hawkins, age 89, of Greenfield, passed away Sunday, April 17, 2022. He was born in Cambridge, Ohio on May 9, 1932 to Harry Vincent Hawkins and Dessie Mae (Tennant) Hawkins. He was a 1950 graduate from Old Washington High School in Old Washington, Ohio. After graduating, John served in the United States Air Force from 1950 to 1954, during the Korean Conflict. On September 11, 1954, John married Delores Dearth in Lore City, Ohio.

He worked for Ametek March Electric in many capacities for nearly 40 years before retiring in 1996. John was a member at Lore City United Methodist Church, where he was a long-time board member and lay leader and lay speaker. Most recently, he attended Eden United Methodist Church. John was a member of Gideon International and Ruritan National. He served on the Rolling Hills School Board for many years and was a past president. He enjoyed volunteering his time with ringing bells for the Salvation Army and helping the Junior Achievement Dollars for Scholars through the Rotary Club. In the late 60’s and early 70’s, John was the Fire Chief for the Lore City Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed spending time outdoors hunting and found many ways to keep busy like farming, raising cattle and traveling. Above everything, he cherished time with his family.

John is survived by his daughters, Jackie Casto (Gary) of Cape Coral, FL and Rhonda Greenwalt (Lynn) of Greenfield; grandchildren, Matthew Casto (Allison) of Pendleton, Aaron Greenwalt (Lora) of Greenfield, and Sarah Ayers (Brooks) of Greenfield; great-grandchildren, Amelia Ayers, Olivia Ayers and baby Casto on the way; sister, Norma Law (Jim) of Senecaville, OH; and sisters-in-law, Mildred Dearth of Senecaville, OH and Martha Hawkins of Old Washington. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Dessie; wife, Delores Hawkins; son, Charles Vincent Hawkins; sister, Dorothy Lamp; brother, Walter Hawkins; grandson, Jason Casto; and mother-in-law, Amanda Mae Dearth.

Visitation will be held on Friday, April 22, 2022 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Lore City United Methodist Church in Ohio A funeral service will begin at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Guernsey County Memory Gardens in Cambridge, Ohio. Local arrangements are being handled by Erlewein Mortuary &Crematory in Greenfield. Additionally in Ohio, arrangements are being handled by Black-Epperson Funeral Home in Byesville.
