GREENFIELD — A motorcyclist was killed after leading law enforcement on a chase from Henry County and crashing into a vehicle in Greenfield Sunday evening, sending the driver to the hospital.

The crash occurred at about 7:03 p.m. at the intersection of State Road 9 (North State Street) and McClarnon Drive in Greenfield, according to a news release from the Greenfield Police Department.

The operator of the motorcycle, Spencer Goodwin, 27, Henry County, was killed upon impact. The driver of a second vehicle was transported to an Indianapolis hospital. GPD Deputy Chief Chuck McMichael said Monday afternoon that the driver remained in the hospital for observation but was doing well and was expected to be released later in the day.

Hancock County law enforcement officers were made aware of a vehicle pursuit entering Hancock County from Henry County on U.S. 40 at around 6:53 p.m., according to the news release. Officers were advised that Henry County was in active vehicle pursuit of a motorcycle that was heading toward Greenfield.

Maj. Jay Davis with the Henry County Sheriff’s Department said that deputies recognized the motorcyclist as a subject wanted for a Level 5 felony warrant. Upon spotting him, he fled, and even prior to initiating a stop he was trying to elude deputies, Davis added.

According to online court records, Goodwin’s Level 5 felony charge was possession of methamphetamine. He also faced charges of unlawful possession of a syringe and possession of marijuana.

Davis said that at times during the pursuit Henry County Sheriff’s deputies were traveling more than 90 mph on U.S. 40 as Goodwin accelerated away from them.

Greenfield Police officers began initiating plans to stop traffic as the pursuit passed through on U.S. 40, according to the news release. Goodwin turned northbound on Jaycie Phelps Road and then westbound again on New Road.

Officers attempted to get to State Street and New Road to stop traffic but Goodwin turned southbound onto State Street. Goodwin then continued southbound on State Street at a high rate of speed and crashed into a vehicle that was traveling eastbound on McClarnon Drive at the intersection.

The Greenfield Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Henry County Sheriff’s Department, Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, Greenfield Fire Territory and Inman’s Towing.
