CHARLOTTESVILLE – Young scientists were recognized for their hard work in a science fair recently at Eastern Hancock Elementary School.

The fair, a 15-year tradition for the school, had students use the scientific method to pose a question and then perform a test to try to find the answer to their question. They created a display board to show their steps and what all they learned.

Then they were interviewed by a judge – a volunteer community member– where they explained what they did and what they learned. Awards were presented, and the top-three-placing students in grades 4 and above qualify to go to a regional science fair.

Kindergarten winners were Zoe White, first place; Gus Fredenburg, second place; and Parker Nicholson and Reid Nicholson, third place. Kindergarten honorable mention were Vayda Middleton, Levi Clark, Aurora Downer, Katherine Wagner, Valerie Bechtel and Audrey Adkins.

First grade winners were Asher Elliott, first; Ava Beyer, second; and Allie Wilson, third. Honorable mention for first grade were Mila Beck and Knox Blackwell.

Clayton Nicholson earned first place for the second grade age category; Claudia Soberlaski won second place; Lochlan Deugan, third. Honorable mention in second grade students were Cash Blackwell, Aubrey Maroska, Addison Redick and Eli Eck.

Third grade winners were Maggie Deugan, first place; CJ Ellis, second; Zoe Beyer, third. Honorable mention for third grade were Evey Hicks, Coral Watts and Tucker Middleton.
