Letter to the editor: We have tried this before

To the editor:

Good thing that some of us old guys are still around to help us remember things that we have tried before, but did not work.

One of those is trying to provide adult and vocational education for Hancock County residents.

Perhaps 20 years ago a large group of local businessmen who called themselves A.C.E. (can’t remember what the initials stood for) tried hard for several years to do this and got nowhere.

Then the City of Greenfield under Mayor Brad DeReamer put some serious money into it but also got no results.

Then the Hancock County Public Library hooked up with Vincennes University and tried for several years with nothing to show for it.

The reason that they all failed, and the reason the new effort cannot get it to work either, is that Hancock County is too small. In order to pay just the cost of teachers, you would have to get 15 people together at say 7:00 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays to take a course on plumbing or English composition, etc. Not going to happen.

I guess if someone wants to try for the fourth time that’s OK, but please do not build the proposed 100,000 sq. ft. building first.
