Preschool funding program proving successful

INDIANAPOLIS – A statewide preschool funding program for low-income families is proving successful, according to two recent studies by Purdue University.

On My Way Pre-K awards grants to 4-year-old children from low-income families so they can have access to high-quality preschool the year before they start kindergarten. A Purdue study released last week by the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration showed that those who used the program have stronger school readiness, language and literacy skills than their peers with similar family incomes who attend lower quality childcare or pre-kindergarten programs. Children attending preschool through On My Way Pre-K continued to outperform their peers through third and fourth grades, as measured in standardized tests in math and English. Children using the program also matched up positively compared to national norms established for all pre-kindergarten children.

More than 15,000 Hoosier children have attended pre-K through a grant since the program began in 2015. Initially a pilot program, On My Way Pre-K rolled out statewide in 2019.
