Sheriff’s Department to hire new merit deputies

HANCOCK COUNTY — Officials with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office are now accepting applications for three merit deputy positions and creating a list of candidates for future deputy positions. The salary matrix starts at $51,000, increasing to $56,000 by year three, $60,000 by year five and continued annual increases, plus any rank or specialty pay. Lateral transfers have the potential to start at $53,500. All applicants will go through a physical agility testing at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 2. Subsequent steps will include a written test, formal application, structured oral interview (by officers), a comprehensive background check, and merit board interview. Candidates offered employment will also be required to pass physical and psychological screening through Public Safety Medical. Applicants must be at least 21 years old, have a high school diploma, current driver’s license and a clean criminal record.
