Letter to the editor: Lawmakers created jail overcrowding

To the editor:

It is interesting that state Rep. Bob Cherry now wants credit for resolving the county jail crowding problem that the very same General Assembly in which he now serves caused several years ago by suddenly requiring that Class D felons be held in county jails rather than sent to state prisons as had previously been the case. (“Legislation addresses jail overcrowding,” Jan. 25, Page A4)

That original legislation caused Hancock County to build a new $40 million jail. Under his new bill, which moves many inmates back to state prisons, we no longer need the new jail!

So, if Rep. Cherry wants to make Hancock County taxpayers whole, he will need to send us $40 million plus interest.
