Prep Roundup: Royals rout Broncos, snap losing streak

CHARLOTTESVILLE — The Class 2A Eastern Hancock Royals team put their losing streak behind them on Thursday night.

After dropping three straight, the 11th-ranked girls basketball team defended its home court against Mid-Eastern Conference foe Daleville with a resounding 57-21 victory.

The Royals (14-5) last won on Jan. 8 against Union County, 56-26, and improved to 8-2 at home behind a 38-8 halftime lead that turned into a 36-point win.

Sammie Bolding finished with a game-high 14 points on 5 of 9 shooting. She shot 2 of 5 from 3-point range. Ruby White had 10 points and three rebounds with two steals.

Caroline Stapleton added six rebounds, five steals, three assists and six points. Makenzie O’Neal had eight points and six rebounds. Anna White chipped in five points and four rebounds.

The Royals have two home games remaining in the regular season, beginning with Pendleton Heights on Monday at 7:30 p.m. and Tri on Jan. 27 following a road contest at MEC foe Randolph Southern on Tuesday. Eastern Hancock is 7-1 in MEC play.

Boys Basketball

Cougars extinguish Red Devils

The Greenfield-Central boys basketball team put a stop to a four-game losing streak on Thursday night, cruising past visiting Richmond, 75-55.

The Cougars’ last win came at home on Dec. 17 against Hoosier Heritage Conference foe Yorktown, 72-65, in overtime.

Afterwards, G-C lost twice on the road and twice at home, including against HHC rival Mt. Vernon, 60-59, in overtime on Jan. 7.

Their game against New Castle, originally scheduled for Jan. 14 was postponed, which meant the program had to wait 13 days since their last contest to get back on track.

The Cougars did just that, leading 20-11 after the first quarter and 35-23 by halftime. G-C added 40 more points in the second half to improve to 5-6 on the season.

Dylan Moles led the Cougars with a game-high 23 points on 8 of 13 shooting and also dished out four assists and hauled in six rebounds.

Joey Roland had 14 points and six rebounds, while Braylon Mullins finished with nine points and seven assists. Tyler Kerkhof (three steals, four rebounds) and Adam Lester each added eight points apiece. Rashawn Street pitched in six points and five rebounds with two steals.

The Cougars shot 48 percent from the field and converted 7 of 17 from 3-point range with four credited to Moles. Roland was 8 of 9 from the foul line as the team went 20-for-21 overall.

Greenfield-Central travels to HHC foe Shelbyville tonight and heads to conference rival Pendleton Heights on Jan. 28.

Wrestling

Dragons dominate on senior night

The New Palestine wrestling team rolled to a 60-19 victory over Greenwood on Thursday to celebrate senior night.

Winners by fall were Cole Vandygriff (106), Diego Reyes (138), Ethan Sleeth (145), Sam Olive (182), Porter Keevers (195) and Juan Camacho (220)

Bryce Doss (113), Trase Quillen (120), Chris Bullock (126) and Porter May (285) all won by forfeit.

The Dragons finish the regular season 11-11.

Gymnastics

Dragons finish second

The New Palestine gymnastics team finished second in a three-way meet Thursday to Columbus North.

The visiting Bull Dogs tallied 104.975 points. The Dragons scored 96.475 and Lutheran 33.55.

On uneven bars, J.J. Fee finished third (8.125) and Alyse Rickey sixth (7.925). On balance beam, Fee was third (8.05), Kennedy Garrett fifth (7.775) and Rickey sixth (7.7). On floor exercise, Addy Kendall finished third (8.675), Fee fourth (8.425) and Garrett fifth (8.225). On vault, Chiara Polo was fourth (8.0), Kendall and Maliah Ringham tied for fifth (7.95) and Garrett sixth (7.85).

Kendall was fourth in the all-around (32.05) and Garrett fifth (31.075).

On Tuesday, the Dragons won their second-straight triangular meet, tallying 98.3 points to beat host Connersville (89.9) and Franklin County (32.1).

Garrett won the all-around with a score of 32.975. Kendall was third (32.625) and Rickey fifth (31.8).

The Dragons won three of the four events.

On vault, Garrett won with an 8.425 score. Emily Hunter was third (8.275), Kendall fourth (8.25) and Addi Bird and Ringham tied for fifth (8.2).

Kendall won on uneven bars with an 8.425 score. Rickey was third (7.725) and Garrett fourth (7.6).

On floor exercise, Garrett posted her second win of the day, tallying an 8.75 score. Kendall was second (8.55), J.J. Fee fifth (8.2) and Rickey sixth (7.95).

Garrett was also second on beam (8.2), with Fee and Rickey tied for fourth (7.95). Kendall was fifth (7.4).

Swimming & Diving

Dragons split with Spartans

The New Palestine swimming and diving teams split a dual meet with Connersville Thursday on the Dragons’ senior night.

The Dragons boys won 121-57, while the girls dropped a 91-81 decision.

Individual winners for the Dragons boys were Dawson Lynch in the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.66) and 100 backstroke (1:02.74), Dontae Thompson in the 200 IM (2:28.72), Aidan Stephens in diving (160.70), James Watson in the 500 freestyle (5:38.72) and Aidan Kingery in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.92)

Also winning were Lynch, Kingery, Liam Fuller and Thompson in the 200 medley relay (1:52.84) and 200 free relay (1:41.11).

Winners for the Dragons girls were Lauren Appleby in diving (132.70), Chloe Siler in the 100 freestyle (1:00.70) and the 200 free relay team of Katelyn Trimpe, Siler, Kyleigh Turner and Sullie Leavell (1:53.41).

The Dragons boys are now 8-2 and the girls are 7-7.

Cougars sweep Golden Bears

The Greenfield-Central boys and girls swimming and diving teams swept past HHC foe Shelbyville Thursday night on the road.

The girls won 117-55, while the boys won 100-65.

The boys team claimed eight events, including Alex Jahrsdoerfer in diving and the 50 free. Other winners were: Derek Noah (200 IM and 100 butterfly), Tyler Swango (100 breaststroke) and the 200 medley, 200 free and 400 free relay teams.

The girls also won eight events with Alyssa Osborn claiming two in the 100 free and 100 backstroke. Osborn was also part of the winning 400 free relay.

Ellie Coleman won the 200 IM. Emily Jones-Estelle won diving. Reagan Crouch was first in the 100 butterfly. Rachel Stutz (400 free relay) won the 500 free. Mary Ellen Stratman was first in the 100 breaststroke and 400 free relay.
