CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Eastern Hancock School Board voted at its meeting on Monday, Jan. 10, to continue requiring masks for middle and high school students for at least another month.

Several parents who spoke at the meeting asked the board to stop requiring masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19. They cited a recent change in policy from the CDC that says people who test positive for the coronavirus but are asymptomatic can end self-isolation after five days. The board members have previously said the main reason to require masks is to prevent long absences from school.

The board members, however, said they were concerned about rising case numbers and voted to keep the policy in place for now. They will consider it again at their February meeting.

Elementary school students at EH are not required to wear masks.
