County adds COVID-19 death as cases soar

HANCOCK COUNTY — The county added a new COVID-19 death, raising its total to 198, while daily cases spike up to and far beyond previous pandemic highs.

The latest fatality was a woman in her 60s who died on Dec. 29, according to information from the Indiana Department of Health.

Hancock County added 141 new COVID-19 cases on Dec. 28, tying a pandemic high set on Jan. 6, 2021. The county then broke that record by adding 154 cases on Dec. 29, and shattered that one with 241 on Dec. 31. Daily counts for Jan. 1 and 2, 2022 were 113 and 54, respectively.

Indiana also set a new daily case high on Dec. 29, 2021, with 11,593, surpassing the last high of 8,436 on Dec. 2, 2020.
