Death brings COVID toll to 197; daily cases top 100

HANCOCK COUNTY — The county added a new COVID-19 death, raising its total to 197.

The fatality was a man age 80 or older who died on Dec. 23, according to information from the Indiana Department of Health.

Hancock County also added 107 new COVID-19 cases on Dec. 27, its most in a single day since last winter’s surge.

Indiana added 170 new COVID-19 deaths between Dec. 16 and 27, raising its total to 18,280. The state also added 5,815 new cases on Dec. 26 and 27.

Statewide COVID-19 hospitalizations stood at 3,058 as of Dec. 27 and occupied almost 40% of ICU beds. That along with non-COVID patients in ICU beds left just 13% available.

Almost 46,000 Hancock County residents are fully vaccinated from the novel coronavirus, more than 62% of the eligible population. Nearly 18,000 have received a booster dose.

More than 3.5 million Hoosiers are fully vaccinated, almost 55% of the eligible population. More than 1.3 million have received a booster.
